Just acquired an RS-1, apparently 2002 production, straight DC, two rail. Bought it not running and it didn't come with an instruction manual. Hesitate to just start trying to take it appart without some guidance.
Does anyone have a manual for this they might copy for me. (Atlas does not have it available on their web site.)

David, there is a parts diagram on the Atlas website. It may give you some insight into how things go together.
And I will check and see if I can find the instruction manual for my rs-1. If I find it I'll pass it along.

These are worse than a chinese puzzle. Besides the screws under the long and short hoods there are many tabs which have to pressed a certain way or they will snap off. Some hold the hoods to the deck, others hold the cab to the hoods. Also all the railings have to be pulled out of the cab. Sorry I can't give a complete blow by blow. I am trying to forget these.

Thanks all and especially Big Train for sending copies of the lube and disassembly pages from the manual. Its not presently running--hoping its minor as it a DC only model but I think I will wait to cooler weather to tackle the disassembly.
the early run RS units suffered from a flaw in the wheel power pickup. Power is routed from the wheels to plungers on their backs, through springs to, wires leading to the motors. Using the springs to route power is the weak link, as heat from current causes the springs to lose their... spring. Ultimately keeping the plunger from reaching the back of the wheels.
This MAY be a cause of the non-running of your unit. There are a couple solutions to rectify the problem, but the simplest, though not long-lasting, is to open up the pickup units and stretch out the springs.

Looking at the parts diagram it looks like these are screwed to the top of the trucks. Is it possible to "drop" the trucks to access these to check?
