Okay guys - I am no expert on the SF but based on the orders we got I know there is a market for them..... What do you want here?..... An ABBA?.... Road numbers?..... what combination of powered and unpowered?....

I hope Jerry Kimble reads this thread and passes it on to the rest of the Atlas crew.

Steve, I would be in favor of both powered and non-powered A's & B's.  That gives the consumer all the freedom he/she needs to build their own Lashup.  Then his wallet or her purse can bark at them to based on what they spend.

I'll tell ya right now, I'm placing MY ABBA order(s) with Mr. Muffin.

I am going to see if I can add these to the current production as a special run.... so I need to some help on what to order..... I could go out on a limb and do 3 or 4 different models but I can't afford to do all of the possible combinations..... so if I could talk them into a special run - what would I order? 2 powered A's and a dummy B? Or would you guys rather wait and see if Atlas does it some time in the future?...

F3 or F7?

The F7s should be numbered between 202 - 280.

I think 269 was the first delivered by EMD to Santa Fe in Cigar Band paint  (I believe in 1953?).  I might be wrong - so don't quote me on it.

For me, powered A's are what I'd want most.

That said, I believe Atlas is currently producing models from 1949. Maybe an early 50s model will show up on the next catalog?

My wish list item is the venerable CF7. Santa Fe built 'em, branch lines love them. I have a preference for the original build, but I'd take them either way.

In the beginning, there were the round top units that keep part of the F-unit cab superstructure. Some even had the original roll-up windows.

Then the "Topeka Cabs". But I think they were fabricated in Cleburne.

LA Junction was a subsidiary of ATSF. On the nose, it had a modified ATSF cigar band that said "Los Angeles Junction Railway"

Amtrak got a few of them. This particular one was assigned to LAUPT.

Then they went into branch and industrial service where MANY still remain in service after over 40 years.

I dig Cat Whiskers - just pre-date my layout by about 20 years.  For some reason I thought Atlas was going to do these as part of the 1949 run - I remember seeing them - but they aren't on their website now.

Mine are easy and more general requiring no new molds.

Atlas please bring back the former Walthers Cornerstone buildings I especially want the two pack of building flats and the Lumber yard.

Another thing I would like to see is to bring back the Industrial Rail traditional sized cars and engines. I am very interested in more of the Passenger cars and the trolleys.

Oh and Atlas, if you are looking, this engine would be an easy one to break some ground and offer dual sealed beam headlights.

It's not hard.  All you would have to do is take a round piece of plastic the diameter of the headlight, drill two holes stick paint it silver and you have a reflector.  Then stick two 1.8 mm LEDs in the holes and use a clear lens.  you will be surprised at how cheap and easy it is to do.

You would then be one up on the other manufacturers.

See the headlight in this engine?

Hot Water:

On F3's and F7's the same as delivered cat whisker scheme with nose emblem lasted until the mid-50's.  The FT's had the cat whisker scheme that changed about 3 times until the cigar band scheme.

Thanks Jacobpaul81, you saved me the time of looking it up.

How long did those "cat whiskers" actually last, especially in the "as delivered" scheme?

According to this website, they were delivered from Oct 1948 - Nov 53.  First full ABBA cigarband was 269 in Nov. 1953.   Not sure when the first 68 were repainted.

Certainly an important model in Santa Fe history - good luck finding an Engineer who enjoyed running them.  When questioned about them, my dad's lone word in response was "Trash."

I grant you that one. I heard some similar stories that they weren't that popular with engineers.

This combo would offer the BEST possible sound balance.

Thanks for your effort.  What can I do to assist?

Earlier in the day I emailed a link to this thread to Jerry Kimble.

I have also posted information on the 3RS Forum.

They are looking into it. I'll let you know what I hear back.

Mr. Muffin - Even though I would have liked the freight Santa Fe F3 A-B-B-A in the Cat Whisker paint scheme, I have to thank you for your efforts to get Jim's project off the ground.

I would have definitely been in for a Cat Whisker F3 and a Cigar Band F7.

To Mr. Kimble - I'm glad to see the excitement in your fine products, and I appreciate your interest in the possibility of doing this project.  I would hope that at some point Atlas would correct the fuel tank design to include the battery boxes seen in the prototype.  Also, maybe not this time, but please consider improving at least the headlight design to model the twin sealed beams in F units.

Attn: Mr Muffin, Jerry Kimble, Howard and all other Forum members.

In an effort to support this project I am more than willing to go with the the F7's in the Cigar Band paint.   If this attracts more interest that is fine with me.  The only request that stands is that I can get two powered A's, one powered 'B' and a non-powered 'B'.

It's called compromise, and it often results in better more positive results.  Having said that, Howard why don't you offer cab numbers.

Thanks to all that have shown interest this topic.

Howard why don't you offer cab numbers.

Jim - I'm with you on the F3 cab numbers.  There were only two sets of freight F3's, 200LABC and 201LABC.

I mentioned before that Atlas may not be able to go back and do an F3 and I say that because I don't know if they had to modify the molds for F7's, but if they can, that would be sweet!

If the have to be F7's they could be numbered 202LABC through 207LABC. Units above number 207 were delivered with twin seal-beam headlights in the standard headlight housing. Lower numbered units were delivered with a single filament 64-volt lamp.

Jim thanks for the concession, which ever way it comes out, it will be an excellent engine.

The powered-b is of less interest to me - B-units became less and less prominent in my modeling period - far fewer ABBA lash-ups by 1968-70.  So I'd be in for 2 powered A's and maybe an un-powered B or un-powered A.
