Admins please remove if this is already being discussed . Noticed today that the big auction site removed the scale filter on searches. My saved searches in O scale are now expanded to all “Model RR Trains” and I’m getting HO, N, Z, S etc. Also when making a new search I can’t filter down to scale so it makes finding items really difficult. I’ve reached out to eBay customer service but would suggest others do the same.

EDIT: The original reply I posted below showing "functional" screenshots was just lucky. eBay is in the process of applying a category reorganization/deletion and it is causing them technical difficulties all over the place. However, when it is all said and done, it seems like the results are pretty bleak. See my further replies chronologically below that completely invalidate the remainder of this reply.

Still shows it for me in app version 6.30.0.2 :

and on their Website:

Edit: I did contact eBay customer service and they informed me that some users are experiencing technical errors browsing and listing categories and to wait 24-72 hours for a fix. Unfortunately, I can't say I'd realistically expect a better response (but I'd definitely want a better one), but it does rot that it is impossible to tell at this point if this is a pacifying message or a real issue that is known and is currently being addressed.

They now have the filter in the sidebar. You can filter by scale or brand name among others. I agree its a step back but not a huge deal as long as the sidebar filters remain.

Pete

I didn't see the sidebar.  That helps considerably but if the person neglects to tag the item accordingly, it will not show the item.

Try looking for Standard Gauge trains.  A few have filters that allow selection of "Lionel Standard Gauge," but the selection of "Standard" brings up many items that are miniatures of real standard gauge equipment in numerous scales rather than Standard/Wide Gauge tinplate.  And selecting "Lionel Standard Gauge" is often not helpful looking for Flyer or IVES. . . .

Another symptom of Novelitis, the disease that compels people to change for change's sake.

palallin,

I would tend to agree, but this is potentially much bigger than that.  It may very well be that the person now in charge has no idea what the difference is between Z, N HO, OO, S, O and Standard Gauge.  Without respect for these kinds of lower-level details, in any market not just trains, no one could find anything -- except by scrolling through the entire list of offerings one item at a time.

They may not be trying to improve things.  Instead they may not be qualified to work for a sales outlet where details are paramount.  In their business, with literally billions of things for up for bid/sale, it's extremely important to be knowledgeable and deeply detail oriented.

The devil is in the details.

I think that this was an unforeseen step backward, rather than a misguided attempt at a step forward.

@Mellow Hudson Mike - Interesting take on the matter.  My suspicion, given the left side bar options that are now visible, is they're trying to move to a tag orientated description based system.  It doesn't mean it's any less painful and it does require more work from BOTH the buyer and seller.  And should the seller not select the right tags for their item (maybe an unsupported color for instance), chances are it will be seen buy fewer people.

Anthony

It appears that eBay is having technical issues with the new category roll outs, but looking into the depths of things, once they settle, it doesn't look good. Of course, the eBay customer service couldn't point me to the category deletion page I just located - just claim technical issues that will be resolved in 24-78 hours.

@Ricky Tanner and everyone else, all I can do is suggest that you contact eBay customer service, reference the category deletions ( https://pages.ebay.com/selleri...ges/preview2021.html ), and explain that these apparent category deletions & reassignments indicate that eBay is out of touch with the model railroading community and you'd like to best be pointed in a direction to effect reconsideration.

This takes less than 5 minutes by following this link and opening a chat or requesting a callback: https://www.ebay.com/help/cont...us?id=4002&st=10

The automated chat robot will try to "help" you, but typing the word agent or human will prompt the robot to open the option for eBay to call you or to open a chat session with a live agent. Once connected with a human via chat or phone call (your choice), simply explain the issue as described in the first paragraph of this reply. Bonus points if you have the category ID numbers that are key. You just need a few like 19145, 19143, 122601, and 180508

Don't expect that they will fix it in real time while communicating with them. The best they can do is mark you down as one of the many affected by this poor recategorization and potentially promise the listings department will reach out to you in a day or two for further details. Should an army of us respond in such a fashion, we may get their attention.

Navy veteran buddy told me one axiom they used aboard ship, was " if it ain't broke, don't fix it".  For a site that sells everything, and staffing problems widely known, not likely to have experts in our interests. . Suspect some changes made just to justify positions .  While l will occasionally wander in other categories, l have long been annoyed to find other scales in "O", thinking seller didn't know the difference, but found  there was the right to list an item in several categories (Grrrr!). Hope this thrashes out.

Did they fix it?  From the 'All Categories' menu, I just tried Lionel O gauge and got umpteen pages of nothing but O gauge.  Then I tried O Gauge, again, pages of  only O, various manufactures.  Then I tried 'O Scale' trains and got a mix of O 'Scale' and O 'Gauge' and a few other 'scales' mixed in here and there.  Perhaps it is a word problem.

I just contacted them. The guy I chatted with could not answer the problem. I asked about 200,000 items that are usually lister. The guy kept asking for an item number or. description. I kept saying no, where are the other 198,000 item as under O Scale Model Trains there are only 1800. He stopped the conversation and disconnected.

I just created a link and it worked on a separate browser for me to pull all O-Scale, so hopefully for you (you can save it if it works).   Here is the link:

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.htm...e=O&_dcat=262301

When it comes up, it says "Lionel Rare Scale Model Railroad Starter Sets & Packs", but it has all brands in the results.

Let me know if this works.

They're apparently currently tinkering with it real-time.  I clicked my way to O-Gauge and found 178,000 items.  However, when I attempted to recreate that path and take screen shots to show the process, when I got to the last step, it didn't display O-gauge, but rather an error page!

I clicked on O-Scale here...

I got this page.

It seems they have royally screwed up their site, I'm sure the people that sell on eBay are thrilled!

I've had an eBay account for 20 years and this is the worst I have ever seen it. I cleared it from my bookmarks so I won't be tempted to frequent it again. Besides, I have enough trains as it is.

It looks like amazon will be getting my business for odds and ends and everything in between from now on.

@C&O Allan posted:

I was able to get it to work again.  Once I scrolled through the options on the left side, selecting o gauge, I saved the search and it then gave me the search results I had before:

Search

I’m a big user of the Saved Searches feature (I typically keep about 20-25 specific O-scale saved searches at any given time)…and just about all of them became useless to me over the past few days with these changes made by eBay.

Like Allan above, I was able to figure out how to get it to work again using the left-side options, so I spent last evening on my laptop editing all of my saved searches.  I saved them as “new” and then deleted all of the corresponding “old” (now useless!) searches.

Everything seems to be working fine now, but it was a lot of work.  I’m hoping I don’t have to do it again anytime soon!

It's a moving target, I had a search that worked great, and I just saved it "again".  I tried it the second time and I got totally different results, instead of 367,968 Results I got 40,277 Results just by closing the page and clicking my shortcut with the link again.  I did it a 3rd time, and I'm back to the old number!

This is the same thing I was doing earlier when they suddenly decided that they couldn't find what I was searching for!

I tried to call ebay yesterday and could only get India or where ever. I decided to try a message to Scott Griggs at TRAINZ  here is the message I sent him and his kind response.

Scott this is a heads up about an eBay matter that affects all who buy and sell on eBay. I am sure you are aware that  eBay users can search for an item on eBay and then receive an email from eBay whenever that item is listed on eBay.  Most of the items that I have purchased from you, in the past, were first sent to me as an email by eBay. Till several days ago only items listed in the category of my search were sent to my email. As of a week ago if my search was in O scale only items listed in O scale were sent to my email. For the last few days I have been receiving items similar to my search but in all scales HO, N, S etc.  and since HO is more common than O scale most of my ebay heads up have been in HO scale. Ebay still has categories by scale but when you go in the front door of toy trains and choose O scale you get a page with a few items but if you click on SEE ALL" nothing happens you have to view all scales at large in the "TOY TRAIN" category which is quite cumbersome and far too time consuming for me, or anyone, to see all available items that I might be interested in.  Someone in their IT department has screwed up their search system.  I hope that you might know someone high enough in eBay's corp. structure that might be able to do something about this situation.   Regards,   John Acton

Scott's reply.

John, Thanks for your email and heads-up. I do know the search team and had several calls with them about their plans. This part never came up. I’ll forward your email to them.

As far as the products from Trainz, we have everything available on our website that we also have on eBay. We actually delay posting those items on eBay for a couple weeks to give our website customers first crack at them, plus we give you rewards points.
Thanks … Scott

I’m on the verge of leaving the bay. I didn’t like when they took away our PayPal payments and now this. They don’t get it. They didn’t notify anyone or ask any opinions about how to change it.

it’s their business and they can do what they want,we don’t have to belong to it.

GG1GUYY

You can still use PayPal as a buyer and a seller on eBay. However you have the option of choosing a direct charge to a credit card without using PayPay.  If you want to use PayPal nothing has changed they just added the ability to use other payment options.

However this change in the search system is not optional and makes it much harder to find what you are looking for.  I would not doubt that at some point eBay will see their mistake and reinstall the once great system but not till the problem shows up in their bottom line.           j

I get sent to the "ERROR PAGE" when I try to search for anything by scale. I have a couple of model train bookmarks/favorites and they don't work anymore. They send me to the error page also. They have really messed up the whole model trains sections. I am planning on contacting them this evening.

At the bottom of the email heads up that eBay sends when you search for an item there is a red and green button with a phrase "Is this email helpful?"  if you click on the red button it takes you to a page that asks you a bunch of questions about your searches along with a box where you can type a 2000 character message. You can only take this pole and type a message once per hour and that is exactly what I did about ten times.  There system does not identify your actual eBay ID when you respond to this so hopefully I am not the only eBay user who has complained about the changes.  I hope all who read this will do so also.          j
