I recently purchased a No. 87 crossing signal that was sold as all original. It just looks too good to be true. Paint is perfect with no fading. Is there anyway to determine if it has been repainted? Test for lead in the paint, etc?
Can you peek inside and see if there is old paint lurking? What if the (supposed) restorer used lead paint? There are DIY lead paint tests available for ten bucks. Weigh that cost vs the cost of the item, vs your enjoyment either way. If it will assuage your suspicions, and satisfy your obsession, go for it.
