Will the Lionel auxiliary tender 6-38007, built for the scale Big Boy, match up well with the Lionmaster Big Boy and Lionmaster Challenger ?  Am concerned that being built for scale, it may appear too large/out of place for Lionmaster, Anyone with pics ?

I remember Matt's post now . I didn't have the scale Clinchfield tender at that time. I just took some pictures for you to look at.

1.  One on the is the left is a regular old rail king 30-1117

2. The center one is a scale challenger tender. 6-38039

3. The one on the right is a Lion Master Big boy tender. 6-28077

I'm not picky, but they just don't match.

I don't keep up, but hasn't there been made a RK or Lionel Traditional aux tender of this particular configuration? Also, think RK UP gas turbine tender (they were steam tenders originally). Tenders do show up alone.

Again, I may be off the beam, but maybe all you might need is some black paint and some almost-certainly available UP decals.

Crazy as it sounds, I'm thinking of buying a second one so that I have one for LM Big Boy and one for LM Challenger and run the two sets passing each other on two loops. Sounds pretty awesome to me if I can convince myself I need to own two of the same car. Price is right -- 2 of these MTH for the price of 1 scale Lionel.  Or if I bought a second aux tender, I could diversify color. Would a yellow one look out of place with the all black loco/tender ? Did the real thing run that way ? I see Matt runs yellow and it looks great to me. And no, I'm definitely not buying two of each color.

Ignore the background, I haven't even started to place accessories, buildings, etc.  Still have more track to lay first.

BTW thanks to everyone from whom I borrowed ideas: 48 inch height, terminal blocks for bus wiring, Woodland Scenics road bed, Rustoleum fleck paint, 3 R Plastic ties, Dick Wacthman's Trainshelf- can't really tell from the pics but all of these greatly increased the look, operation and fun of my toy train layout.

Based on all this  information and the accumulated photos I  ordered these today:

1. Rail King 30-79539.   Gray / yellow lettering water tender Union Pacific.    #3977

2. Rail King 30-79540 Black / white lettering water tender Union Pacific.       #3983

Wouldn't mind having them for my Western Maryland #1201,  Norfolk and Western #1218  Rio Grande #3803  Legacy Lion masters I also have.

Love those LM on a small layout.

That may be a wee bit greedy .lol

I love how you think Larry, I’m planning on getting the water tender my Class A. I have a Challenger and Big Boy but I’m gonna wait after I get some other stuff first before I pick up a tender for those two.

Well, I bought Yellow and a set of Williams Crown Edition. Can't tell much from my photos but a definite difference between shades of the yellow color between Williams cars and the MTH tender.

Another disappointment was that the Williams cars came new in the box with RUSTED axles on 3 of the 6 cars. I can clean them up but why should I have to do that on a "new" item.  Risk of buying off the bay or poor quality by Williams ? Plus there is a spot of silver on the frame of the tender and a spot of yellow on the other end of the frame. The silver trucks look silly next to the black Williams trucks.  I am beginning to regret this whole purchase.

Certainly in recent excursion service

Image result for up challenger with yellow water tender

The UP converted/rebuilt these auxiliary water tenders from fuel tenders they had used with their gas turbine engines. Before that they had been converted/rebuilt for the gas turbines from tenders used with Challengers and FEF Northerns. The UP has used four of these water tenders, and two of them are currently in service. They were only built for operation with the "heritage" steam engines used for excursion service in the modern era, necessary of course because water towers are no longer in existence.

They were never used with steam engines when the UP was actually using steam engines in commercial service, so if by the phrase "Did the real thing run that way?" you mean when steam engines were still in service, the answer is no. They would only be appropriate to use if you're modeling a modern UP excursion train.
