This may be a bit off-topic -

Last night, I went to see the Riverdance 25th Anniversary Tour. There is one scene where the background has a subway entrance, with the sign showing the B and E train symbols, saying DOWNTOWN/Brooklyn.

On the current route map, the only place where the B and E come together is along 53rd Street, where the E comes off of 8th Ave to head into Queens, and the B comes off of 6th Avenue to go up 8th Ave until it branches off after 145th Street to head into the Bronx. The only shared stop is at 7th Ave and 53rd Street. This station, though, is also served by the 6th Ave D train.

At the time of the original Riverdance, was there a station where only the B and E made stops? It has to be in Manhattan, due to the "Downtown and Brooklyn" signage (presumably, the other side of the street said Uptown, Queens and The Bronx). Or was this a case of the set designer knowing just enough to be dangerous?

Hi Gerald

The current B and E do share the same platforms at the 7th Ave/53rd station. However only the B goes to Brooklyn, M-F, via the Brighton Beach Line. The E serves Queens and Manhattan only.

Years ago the E did go Brooklyn via the Fulton Street Line. The E terminated at Euclid Ave or Rockaway Park. This was rush hours only. The route BB was a rush hour local from 168st Washington Hgts to 34st. Both shared the 7th Ave station.

After the Christie Street connector opened (1967) , with the B and E did service Brooklyn. And did share the 7th Ave/53 st station. I believe it was around 1975 or 76 that the E was cut back to Chambers St/WTC permanently.

I am sure others will chime on.
