I recently got a PS2 steamer. Everything works great except the sound is badly garbled/distored. The battery is white (old?) but is reading 9.2 volts. Could it still be bad? Defective speaker? Would a BCR be a solution?

First, that is an extremely old battery! Do NOT use the engine until it has been placed, preferably with a BCR. The chances of the battery causing damage to the electronics is fairly high. You are lucky it is even showing 9.2 v.
Second, while the battery could cause the garbled sound, it is much more likely that the speaker is at fault. Take a close look at the speaker. If you see metallic particles flaking off the magnet, it is shot. Look on the back side of the speaker for the rating. You want ohms and watts. Measure the outer diameter of the metal frame. That will give you the size. You can try contacting your local hobby shop, or call Hennings in Lansdale PA, or go on line and try to find a replacement. The ohms rating and diameter are the the primary values to worry about. You can get by with a different wattage.

Right on both counts Chris. When I opened up the tender I immediately noticed filings flaking off the magnet then the white battery. Am getting a BCR today and will check out the speaker. I was surprised when examining some other postings that the speaker can go bad. (Luckily) I have a couple ps2s that burned out so they're distant scenery now, so maybe there's a good speaker there. Everything else works fine. Thank you
- Success. A new BCR and an exact match mth speaker from one of my old dead locomotives that is now scenery did the trick. Sounds good as new. Thanks for the advice!
Yea sometimes the coating on the speaker will flake off and cause just enough short to distort the sound.
Like the username. I weather with artist's chalk and a fine brush then seal with matte spray, including the "rusty couplers!"
