No matter how good the recording is if the speaker does not have the range it will not replicate the sound. On the other hand if the sound is not their in the first place no speaker will replicate it. Just as if if you have bad hearing you can not hear the sound. For about $20 you can get a "full range speaker". Graphs charting frequency response are on the various websites. I can tell you the stock MTH speakers I have seen do not look like they could replicate much range due to the small magnet and space they occupy. And the stock 4 ohm ones I have seem to deteriorate over time. In normal use speakers should not need replacement. How many speakers have you replaced in your lifetime on the electronic devices in your home. So I do not look to MTH for replacement as I lack confidence in their quality of parts.
Whether it is worth cutting the frame is subjective depending on how much work you want to do and how important the sound is to you. This is not about volume it is about frequency response.. Anyway some speakers can be fit in without cutting,especially in steamers or mounted in dummy diesel units. In the latter case decent baffling can also be made. If you just want to get the thing working so you can sell the engine then just get a cheap speaker that fits in,which is the condition the engine came in new out of the box.
