I’ve always wanted to ballast track but since I have a ceiling loop, I don’t want to waste time and patience to only see bits and pieces of it so grand idea!  I’ll make a shelf to put my engines on so I don’t leave them in the corners of the room so they are easily accessible and I can just pull one off and place on the shelf when o want to change.  So I bought some cork sheets from Wally World and built a double thick (roughly 1/2”) road bed on a shelf and placed some custom bumpers at the one end:

Then what to do about ballast.  Hmmmmm. I have this old bag of chicken grit, let’s try it!  So I pour it on and low and behold it was too thick, too large, just didn’t work (sorry no picture.)

What to do what to do, oh I know let’s sift it! (Sorry dear, I’ll wash the colander ) so after getting bits of grit on the carpet I applied it to my test track shelf and my goodness, I’m liking what I see!!

Let me know what you fellow forum goers think!  I got tired of sifting so I’m going to the tsc to get different size grit.  The rest goes to Gladys, my chicken.  It’s a win win!
