It appears that ALL the surveilance cameras on BART trains were dummies connected to nothing. Shhhh. A deliberate decision to save money. This month BART issued a contract to replace the dummies with real cameras.

Tommy, your information is in error. On BART about 40% of the onboard security cameras were real, the rest were dummys. This is when they were installed about 10 years ago. Poor maintenance could have reduced the number of active cameras, I do not know what has happened in recent years. This was done not to save money, but to stretch that available grant money as far as possible.

Uhh... How is that different than doing it to save money? False security, but what else is new. 
BART is a disaster. They have been suppressing news stories / covering up crime on their trains in order to be politically correct

The fact that BART was using fake cameras first came to light when a person was murdered on a crowded train. Neither the train or station cameras were working. I don't think that anyone has been caught for committing this crime yet.
BART has a lot of problems including crime. CA tax payers and the people in the SF Bay Area have poured billions into the system. All the problems are very frustrating. Frankly, it is BART's managements fault. Unfortunately, as with everything in CA, management is political instead of professional. About six months ago one of the SF newspapers found that some BART station janitors were getting paid $257,000 per year (I'm not kidding) and the stations were still dirty. (The $257,000 includes overtime pay.) This is very, very sad.
There is a lot I like about my home state and the SF Bay Area but BART isn't one of them. (I rode BART to and from work for 15 years when I was working but I haven't been on it much since I retired. I think my last trip was about a year ago.)
