Bent engine electrocoupler

Safe, maybe, but it'll likely break at the bend.  Couplers are cheap, just replace it.

I would check the engine very carefully for other damage. I’ve never seen a die cast coupler bend like that.

Actually, I've seen a few, I believe there's one still sitting on the bench in back.  It's typically shipping damage from poor packing.

Thanks for the responses, it looks like a replacement coupler is the way to go. The parts listing on the website doesn't have the coil coupler listed, I did a measurement and found that it's right about 2" in length. Is there an in stock go-to part I should look into ordering?

As far as actually replacing the coupler as well, is there any guide on it? (I assume I'll probably end up having to do a bit of soldering)

A TMCC Dash 9 6-31736  shows 2 in stock 2.01 or 2.02 inches long

A newer  Legacy Dash 9  6-39568  shows them in stock. parts diagram states its 1.85 inches long

I'm not sure which one would work if any. Maybe @gunrunnerjohn can help.

I'd use the 2" one if the existing one measures 2" overall length.

2 months later, tis a breeze in time.

Ordered 2 electrocouplers - a 2" and a 1.74", turns out it's a 1.85" coupler, so the 1.74 is a tad short, and the 2" a tad big. Is it worth the shipping and another 15$ to get the right size, or is sizing down/up not going to be an issue.

On the question of replacement, should I detach the entire truck to do this? the coupler seems to be cable managed through it.

And does the coupler polarity matter? Left side on the bent one is color coded as gray, so I assume it's the hot, but the 2 replacement couplers are black/black

No problem going either way as a rule when it's that small an increment.  Obviously, going longer will just increase how far it sticks out.  Many times I've shorted up the couplers on steam tenders to get a more prototypical spacing from the first car.

There is no polarity on couplers, it's just a coil.

New coupler soldered in place (I'd give myself a 1/10 on the solder job), testing to commence tomorrow after my back finishes recovering from having to hunt down that stupid little spring clip that keeps the coupler centered that flew off into the void.

They have a name for those clips that fly off into the sunset, but I won't repeat it here!   I'm sure there are a number of them under and around my workbench, because I know I've had to dig quite a few out of my parts box!
