I've opened hundreds of smoke units for repairs and upgrades, and I've never seen any excessive buildup from any brand of smoke fluid.  Let's face it folks, the smoke unit is going to be one of the most maintenance intensive items on the locomotive no matter what fluid you use, nature of the beast.

I've tried a number of brands and I see very little difference between any of the name brand smoke fluids.  YMMV

Just open one, look inside, and you’ll see sediment settled into the bottom of the bottle. You have to shake the bottle vigorously to mix the insoluble scent agent with the smoke fluid.

Glad to see I’m not the only one to notice that...

BTW - JT’s recommends shaking the bottle as well.

I hope this thread is still read  --

I have used MTH ProtoSmoke fluid in my TMCC Steam Locomotive and my wife made me throw it out! !  She said it smelled terrible, something like "a burning oil fire".  The smell was strong and abrasive.   The puffing of smoke was just ok, nothing like the video on JT's Mega Steam

The vast majority of responses above seem to prefer JT's Mega Steam, so I will ask those folks the following questions:

1.  What is the best scent from Mega Steam??

2.  Mega Steam's website promotes their "Eliminator" product that "cleans and eliminates bad smells of the smoke unit", has anyone used it??   with what results??

3.  On the other hand, if my steam unit is bad and the Eliminator product does not 'clean it', how do I repair it??  I've read elsewhere on the OCR Forum about a "clean re-wicked smoke unit"   Can anyone comment on where I can go to get instructions about "re-wicking" or "cleaning" my smoke unit??

Thanks in advance for everyone's response  ---

How long is a road?  I ask because it's the same kind of question.

Obviously, the "best" scent varies based on your individual preference.  I happen to use Clove Sensation a lot as it's one my wife likes the scent of, so that's a big bonus.

2.  Mega Steam's website promotes their "Eliminator" product that "cleans and eliminates bad smells of the smoke unit", has anyone used it??   with what results??

After a couple of fills, it'll remove the existing scent from a scented smoke fluid, my experience is it works pretty well.

There's tons of threads on replacing the wick in a smoke unit, the exact procedure will vary based on the type of smoke unit you have.  Smoke unit maintenance is a fact of life if you run with smoke, we've just learned to live with it.

It doesn't "clean" your unit, as it sounds  like you may be inferring. It just rids the existing aroma you smoke unit may be emitting.  Its not going to make a smoke unit work anty better or "clean" the unit of any dirt/charring.

To all, and especially GRJ  -  I apologize  -  asking what is the 'best scent' is ridiculous - it would be like asking what is the best locomotive.

Now, again to GRJ, " . . . There's tons of threads on replacing the wick in a smoke unit, the exact procedure will vary based on the type of smoke unit you have.  Smoke unit maintenance is a fact of life if you run with smoke, we've just learned to live with it.

I have the Lionel 6-11101 Berkshire Jr Steam Engine with TMCC & RS, no where in the Owner's Manual does it discuss the type of smoke unit.   Since you indicate smoke unit maintenance is a fact of life, would you please -

1st - help me find out what type of smoke unit I have

2nd - tell me how to find the multiple threads that discuss replacing the wick in a smoke unit. ( I am a relative newbie to this forum and I do not know how to look up specific topics of discussions)

Thanks again for all your help ---
