Hello:

Over the last few years I have been making the switch from Command Control, to focusing on Postwar/MPC Era Lionel. I have left a MTH Z-750 and a Lionel CW-80 transformer.  My layout is dismantled currently, so either a loop on the floor or a small 3x4 portable layout is currently utilized. I have the floor space to expand to either 060 or 072 Fastrack, but still sticking with one loop, albeit larger in size. I get so-so performance via the two modern transfers I described about on a 40x80 or so Fastrack 036 loop, slightly better with older tubular track. I have been looking at some 1033, KW, LW or TW options.

I guess i am looking for opinions on using postwar to run postwar with better performance than post and modern. also, i think the Z-750 and the CW-80 are tired at this point.

Is there a need for an external in-line circuit breaker with the PW transformers for additional protection?

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Personally, I noticed that our trains ran better when I converted to Lionel 180w and 135w bricks about 15 years ago.  Based on that experience I have gravitated towards modern power sources and generally find the trains run better with them.  I like the bricks but a new ZW (pricey and powerful but you will be one and done) or z4000 would likely do better with your postwar than a period correct transformer and you will have the benefit of modern circuit protection.

Michael,

There are lots of different good transformers for you to pick from.  The reason you think your current transformers are tired is that they are introductory type transformers. I always recommend that any decent layout be powered with at least a Z-1000 at minimum.  The old Lionel ZW's are great transformers, just use the 10 Amp resettable breakers with your modern train layouts.  Many people like the ZW-C's with the bricks, hate them myself, got no use for bricks.  The Z4K is an outstanding transformer, with the side receiver that opens up many running options, they are hard to beat.  The ZW-L is a great Transformer, if you want to mortgage your home to own one, top shelf power supply however.  If you decide to stay small and inexpensive with your transformers, get rid of the CW-80 and get another KW.

Good luck with your Transformer purchase.
