hi, I'm new to posting but I have a question no one can answer regarding my prewar #33 loco. What is the binding post on the top of the loco for? I assume it's for lighting but have never seen any pictures of it being used. Any information would be greatly appreciated

Logically, lighting.
Do you have any pictures of how it's tethered to the cars or lights? I want to go for an original look. I have a #35 and #36 passenger cars.
Depending on whether you use AC, Reduced DC or Batteries; a cloth-covered wire with appropriately spaced sockets and compatible (8V or 14V) bulbs available in either #27, #217, #270 or #271 lighting set are strung from car to car through the open car ends and clamped to the cross member. One end of wire goes around binding post on engine. Sockets get the middle rail power from this binding post and the outer rail "ground" through the car bodies.

Clever idea, and saves you having to install and wire pickups in each car! (makes notes)

Thanks guys! I can seem to find any pics of this on the internet. Anyone have any?
This is the DC version of what you're looking for, mate:
Presumably a bulb-swap would work for AC.
Very difficult to find...
PD
Joe Mania at JLM Trains makes a reproduction of the original lighting set. It is designed to connect the engine to the individual passenger cars.
Here is the repro made by Joe Mania, i bought it at York some years ago and don't know if still available. It is a very well made product.
