I've been working on cleaning up a Blue Missile Firing Car and Missile Firing Engine (6544 & 44).  I noticed a lot of discoloration in the bodies of both.  It seems like whatever cleaner I use, I get blue "paint" or dye on the cleaning cloth and I'm concerned I'm making the problem worse.  2 questions:

1)  What type of cleaner do you recommend that does not take the paint or dye off.  Any techniques that work well?

2)  Is there a paint or something I can use to make the coloring uniform again?

Thanks!

John

Chuck - thanks!  I haven't had a chance to try the WD-40.  The 6544 had a build up of something yellowish around the missile launch.  I tried everything, except WD-40, without any luck.  I will see how it does.  When I was cleaning the blue frame with 91% rubbing alcohol, the blue frame became discolored and it seemed to take the paint or dye off.  I'm concerned WD-40 will do the same.

Does anyone know how they colored these frames.  I've not seen this before with other lionel shells - the blue ones, or mine seem different.
