I'm reading "The BMT, A Technical and Operational History" by Alfred E. Fazio, and I'm enjoying it so much I decided to post about it.
It's not strictly a railfan book, but a monograph by a professional engineer who hoped to use the history of the BMT's development as an example to transportation planners and designers of the wide range of transportation options that can coexist to meet a community's transit needs. It took him 10 years to write the book.
It is dense with history, engineering and technology of cars, stations and route planning , and has many maps and diagrams, and a nice selection of photos. At times the writing is thick with facts presented in a plain, straightforward style that can be hard to get through.
But I am learning so many things about the history of the transit system as well as the evolution of the technology and all the design considerations that went into the present-day system, and being an engineer by training, I am finding myself more and more interested in the book as I spend time with it.
