Growing up next to the tracks in the 60's trough 80's I saw tank trains, hopper trains, and boxcar trains. I always liked the boxcar trains the best do to the variety of sizes and colors.  Let's see what you have on your pike.  Real boxcar pictures are good to as long as you have permission to use them or there your own.

Lionel X31A box car weathered

Weathered by Steve

Steve,  Is that factory lettering or did you paint and redo the lettering on your X-31A box car?  Thank you, John in Lansing, ILL

Factory (Stock) Lionel 6-17736 Pennsylvania Round Roof Boxcar found it on the bay awhile back. I only decorated it and re-sold it back on the bay. I think Don Klose got it?

Just got this one off daBay. Old Athearn, maybe All-Nation, 50ft kit. Previous owner had put some nice Lionel die-cast trucks on it (too far outboard - 3-minute re-drill and move mod) and it has a good paint job and lettering.

I've said it before, I like these old metal kits because they look...metal, like the real thing. Thin cross-section material. Not as hyper-detailed as the new stuff (which is beautiful), but I don't care.

Often inexpensive, too - especially if already in the 3RO configuration, as this one was. And, if assembled correctly, pretty robust.

DSCN2974

Essentially all the underbody detail that I typically need.

Unless you've had a wreck...

In a moving train most of that minute detail is lost to the eye. Nice car.

Santa Fe MOW car from double door boxcar

Santa Fe MOW car.  Santa Fe was infamous for diluting the silver paint used to cover an ex-revenue car.

Pecos River Santa Fe tool car with box end.

John Smith commissioned this model which is quite rare and goes for big bucks at auction houses.

I diluted silver latex paint and ours runs in our MOW trains.  I need to apply black decals.

Scratch built based on photo found on berlinr site. I still wonder if this is a photo shop he did and had tried to contact him about it without success.  Used an MTH frame and trucks, shortened to 34 feet scale, atlas details.  Apparently this type of reefer was real from comments I received several years ago when I inquired on the real train forum.  It was a project that made me appreciate scratch modelers even more.

Since have stuff to do this weekend, will not wait till Sunday.

Last week Justhavnfun posted photo of his Lionel (probably KL tooling) voltmeter N&W box car.

Here is my original K-Line with Reddy Kilowatt.  As stated before since working in the power industry for almost 3-decades "Reddy" was a must have.

Nice!  Tell us about the other car marked for ADN still.

Not sure it's real but extraordinary modeling and photography.  Look closely at the foreground scenery and then check it out here (scroll down to Kyle 5200).  Certainly puts my meager effort to shame.  I was just looking for something with ADN boxcars to imitate.

You know,  I think those are HO models.  The reason I asked about that ADN car is that I need some of that type of boxcar as they aren't available in O scale yet (?).    Great photography on that link you shared!!

Take care

Weaver actually produced this car in this paint scheme a number of years ago in O gauge.

The Ex-ADN Car looks like a Plate C car, a good match would be the Atlas Trainman model.  Weaver produced a similar Plate B car.

I was referring to the ADN car circled in red.  Not available (yet) in 1/48

Still an outstanding weathering job on HO models

Probably a same dimension 50' box car from a different freight car builder at the time, different lower sill, unfortunately MTH,Lionel, Atlas etc will produce tooling for one specific mfg prototype and letter it for all paint schemes they believe their customers want/will buy. In the much larger HO market variations on a specific prototype ie 50' plug door are available from different mfgs and many modelers will kit bash for a specific model. just saying!

If you pony up the $100,000.00 so for new tooling they would probably go for it!

Love the Christmas tree unloading boxcar scene, Patrick. It's so perfect for this time of year. The evergreen trees you used are the perfect size, great proportion, so visually correct! Who's the manufacturer/supplier of them? Do you have a part or order number for the trees? What's their size, where did you get them?

Excellent photos Patrick. Thanks for sharing! I remember as a young boy this was the way that many of the trees arrived in Newark, NJ and made their way to all the temporary corner lots.  Those lots, that were an eyesore for11 months of the year, became transformed to a magic holiday land. At least that is the way it seemed to a 7-year-old who went with his Dad to find that "perfect tree". Thanks for the memory!
