After close and careful examination, I discovered that I was able to bend the horn back to the upright position without damaging it. I thought at first it was hard plastic but it would move.

Well yeah, making that out of plastic would make it seem like you would bend it just from blowing on it too hard. Most manufacturers make the intricate details out of metal; such as the horn, bell, handrails, and etc. But for some reason the separately applied steps, on the pilots, are made of plastic.

At least Lionel takes the extra step to make the details on the trucks out of metal. My Atlas O Dash 8s have the truck details made out of plastic, which gives me a bit of fear while handling the model by the trucks.

Parts from North Lima Train Works will be delivered today based on UPS email this a.m.  Photos to follow.

Also, bought 3 smooth-sided LIONEL 15" aluminum passenger cars off eBay last night for my GN Empire Builder project--they replace 3 passenger cars I had on hand  and intended to use but had the wrong fluting for my purposes.

One of a number of reasons I dislike a lot of the Atlas stuff.  It's almost impossible to handle one of their diesels without something falling off.

After my trip to KC for BNSF and visits to LPKC and the Argentine yard, I was on a "BNSF High" and wanted to add some more BN/BNSF equipment to my roster.  I ended up picking up a Lionel BNSF gondola with graffiti and a BN MTH GP38-2 for Legacy Station the other week - I love the GP38 (sounds and horn are amazing!)... although DCS/sound is behaving a bit odd (sounds occasionally get high-pitched and scrambled). I think I've worked out the kinks (Feature Reset and Factory Reset), running it a lot lately to make sure. Next step is a sound file reload via DCS, if that doesn't work, then back to MTH!

In a Walter Mitty moment, I had a debate in my own head about needing more humor amongst the Lilliputians of our O scale layout. Will be putting Charlie Chaplin and Mr. Bean out in front of one of the many pubs in the section known as Irishville. Should be good for a few laughs. Now if I could just find Danny Kaye.

My first order from the new owner of North Lima Train Works arrived today:

nltw 001nltw 002

Big box, plenty of bubble wrap, and everything arrived safe and sound.nltw 015nltw 016nltw 017nltw 018

There was more stuff, but the UP "Plainfield" vista dome and the upper and lower level interiors for the full vista dome were the important items.

The "Plainfield" will be used in a Norther Pacific North Coast Limited train--the train lacked a vista dome because I didn't want the typical LIONEL centered vista dome and that was what was available all those years ago when I painted it.  So this offset dome will fill the void.

The interior for the full dome will go into a Great Northern Empire Builder project.  The aluminum, full dome car is a LIONEL TCA convention car using interior parts from other LIONEL domes that came with interiors--hence the parts order from NLTW.

Bottom line:  My experience with NLTW could not have gone better--everything I ordered was carefully packed; promptly shipped; and, arrived complete and undamaged.

Got in a Gloor Craft coaling tower kit...this makes the third brand kit for a coaling tower l have.  A quick glance makes it look like the easiest to build, and l have seen good models and heard good comments about the kit.  Problem is, on this dinky shortline, the ten-wheeler crew would feel blessed if they aren't coaling with a bucket and windlass, or shoveling out of a gon on a raised ramp. I have that small, modern one-chute kit, too, but think it too modern. So the three large towers may be too large, still, and l will have to scratch build a wooden one-chute tower.  Or maybe l SHOULD build a ramp, and windlass?

D&H, beautiful colors and design--post some more photos.

I needed smooth sided, 15" aluminum streamlined passenger cars for a couple of paint projects.  Excellent candidates are the TCA convention cars LIONEL made in the early 2000's so I bought three in the past couple of days.

The first purchase, scheduled to arrive today, is the Railway Post Office car--I plan to add the large mail hook and some bars over the doors and windows to improve its prototype appearance:

Next up is the full dome:

Last is the diner:

I've used these TCA cars as donors in the past and found the paint is very easy to remove, and their interiors provide plenty of space for conversion to LED lighting, though the full dome will be a first for me.

Thanks for looking.

My god I had forgotten all about the fighting seabees.A movie about them that had jhon wayne in it.

When I was stationed at Port Hueneme, in California, we had a Seabee museum that played The Fighting Seabees.  John Wayne, William Frawley and a host of others. The museum was nothing more than a Quonset hut with some improvements to the front entrance.  The Seabees, with the help of our private donations has built a new state of the art museum.

There is another, smaller museum in Davisville, Rhode Island.  Davisville was my permeant duty station before being shipped, or should I say flown, to Vietnam.

Those cars are great for smooth side painting projects. They are cheap to acquire as well. I used 6 of them to create my Southern Pacific "Golden State" consist. I had to make my own end cap to create a blunt end sleeper, because no one makes one.

Ever thought about the one from plasticville now (bachmann).I have one and it does not seem to big.I think a ten wheeler would look right at home.

The accidental order that mushroomed.  Background, Lionel cataloged something I like.  But was not happy with msrp.  Stopped by local dealer and asked O-gauge staff to get me a price.  Later found that the item was cataloged about 5-inches too short fro scale.  Tried three time to get a response from Lionel "ask us" with NO answer.

Walk in local dealers one day and was greeted with your car is in.  Told him really did not order it but wanted to see it.  Saw it brought it. Then ordered it's sister.  When that one came in order another one even though it was cataloged with rectangular windows instead of era appropriate porthole ones.  Now considering  a fourth.

Very nicely done SP Golden State set using the TCA cars, especially the blunt end sleeper.  Did LIONEL sell the car badges/plaques?

The RPO arrived today and it's perfect for my purposes--easy paint removal; minimal bodywork; and easy LED install.

I ordered 4 Lionel Freight cars on the 15th, and all four arrived today. I've been wanting the Frisco and Rio Grande cars for a while, but the other two I got because they were price fillers ^^; Either way, very happy with the purchases!
