Joe,

I have made it a strict policy to use the Buy Now entity, no bidding.  One of the reasons is more than likely you are bidding against one or even a few of the different forum members, and you end up driving the cost up most times, much more than the item is actually worth.

Well I was trying to get a like new Black and Brass 260 from mth with PS3 off the bay.  The auction ended a couple days ago.  I bid as high as full retail which I wasn’t super comfortable with but I wanted it and the seller had good feedback.  I watched in the last minute as it first went $20 over retail, and then as I started to mull over how bad I wanted it, the auction closed at $50 over full retail + shipping.  I hoped I wasn’t bidding against a forum member.  Clearly someone wanted it much more than I did, I hope they enjoy it.

You did good, control is a must in those situations.  260's come around a lot.  I mean retail is like $400 for those.  You can do better.  The only one I see really holding it's value is the Orange 255E they made...Maybe I'm comparing New in the box engine's with slightly used ones.  I figure if I would be running it anyway, let him take the depreciation hit!

I totally agree.  Do you use GavelSnipe or a service like that?  It's revolutionized eBay for me.  Now I just think of my best price and put it in GavelSnipe.  It will put your bid on the auction with 5 seconds left (or whatever you set it at).  It keeps you from going crazy and putting in that extra bid at the end.

I am something of a newbie to evilbay.  I never heard of gavelsnipe, I will have to look into it.  The engine went for something like $452 plus shipping.  The pictures looked great but being used and without testing and no warranty it seemed like too much for me.

I did however win a 1666e with whistle tender as something of a consolation prize.  I've never had one so I am looking forward to it, and of course I'll post some pictures once it arrives.

Matt,

Yes, that sounds like a little too much for me as well. Patience will bring you something better.

Thanks Joe,

Actually when I went to the right shop, I found a few, all in excellent condition. Any guys in or near North Jersey, you should reach out to Ed and Doug at the Train Collectors Warehouse. Top shelf items, incredible inventory.

Bassett Lowke Super Enterprise in LMS Crimson Lake, tinplate live steam in gauge 0.   Purchased from a dealer in the UK and on its way to me now.  Most BL stuff on fleabay has asking prices that are way out in left field.  Got a better price from a dealer in the UK, fancy that.  Going to start collecting and running UK LMS railway tinplate in live steam and clockwork.      Mike the Aspie
