I finally got my first set of tinplate passenger cars!  

A big thank you to the gang at Side Track Hobbies! Definitely worth a side trip for any tinplate enthusiast.  Here’s my brand new 700’s. Now I just need to look for appropriate power. Sidetrack ie really great.  I remember the 384e Christmas I bought from them. When I unpacked it there 4 extra straight pieces of track slid into the box. I received a 400E 3 years ago that had paint loss, they replaced it. Therefore, they are Always my 1st choice! Beautiful set. A red 256 in your future?

    I received some Pre-War AF Tin today also.  A real nice Red Lighted Caboose and a old Aqua and Orange Box Car.  Both in pretty darn good shape, I actually got them to couple with my Lionel Tin and  everything ran just great.  The Box car is one heavy piece of Tin for an O Gauge Car.

   Did I actually read you were running great old Tin Plate Trains with MTH Bricks!   You have to pick up a Z4K and Side Receiver, along with the DCS and run the good old Tin Plate Engines with the DCS HHRC via the TR mode.  The old engines run smooth as silk in this manner, shame on you for powering your good Tin Plate with a nasty Brick.  Bricks are for building homes, not running classic Trains.

Clean and wax is great.  The Sell car is almost completely rusted out from tge inside.  It seems these Marklin tank cars could carry fluids and of course rust from those same fluids.  The outside looks ok though

   I have made it a strict policy to use the Buy Now entity, no bidding.  One of the reasons is more than likely you are bidding against one or even a few of the different forum members, and you end up driving the cost up most times, much more than the item is actually worth.

Thanks, Dave.  I'm putting together a regular freight consist and Christmas consist.  Also, waiting on FedEx/UPS for a couple passenger sets.  Hopefully, more pics later this week or next.  Though regrettably, no operating layout until this summer.

By the way, I laid out these cars on the window sill to take the pictures.  I told my twelve year old daughter to take a look.  She said, "cool".  Then after a few seconds she pointed to the yellow "girl's" car and said "I really like the colors of this one".  So after all these years, maybe Lionel did have a good idea with the girl's set after all!

Well I was trying to get a like new Black and Brass 260 from mth with PS3 off the bay.  The auction ended a couple days ago.  I bid as high as full retail which I wasn’t super comfortable with but I wanted it and the seller had good feedback.  I watched in the last minute as it first went $20 over retail, and then as I started to mull over how bad I wanted it, the auction closed at $50 over full retail + shipping.  I hoped I wasn’t bidding against a forum member.  Clearly someone wanted it much more than I did, I hope they enjoy it.

You did good, control is a must in those situations.  260's come around a lot.  I mean retail is like $400 for those.  You can do better.  The only one I see really holding it's value is the Orange 255E they made...Maybe I'm comparing New in the box engine's with slightly used ones.  I figure if I would be running it anyway, let him take the depreciation hit!

I totally agree.  Do you use GavelSnipe or a service like that?  It's revolutionized eBay for me.  Now I just think of my best price and put it in GavelSnipe.  It will put your bid on the auction with 5 seconds left (or whatever you set it at).  It keeps you from going crazy and putting in that extra bid at the end.

I did however win a 1666e with whistle tender as something of a consolation prize.  I've never had one so I am looking forward to it, and of course I'll post some pictures once it arrives.

Last year I bought so reproduction MTH AF freight cars but never found an engine that I could afford to go with it. The other day I picked up an original Flyer in great condition that works perfectly (needs a rewire, insulation is cracking) but runs like a champ

   Real nice Cars both of them, I just picked up about 6 Cars from my buddy Jim up in NH.  The Mini Caboose Collection has expanded again, with a couple more nice Green on Green 817 Cabooses.

Well recently I came across this yellow gondola.  I have no idea if it’s rare or common but I hadn’t seen a yellow one before so I picked it up.

Also picked up this fantastic USTTC boxcar from Papa Eastman. I had never heard of this company before or seen their product.  I am still learning about tinplate, but one thing I have learned is the time to buy something you like is when you see it, so I couldn’t pass this up.

The USTTC are semi clones of 800 series, or the later 2800 with box couplers. Looks good. The one that is a bit different is the caboose. They have a off center cupola.

1 real nice original Flat Green on Green with Gold Trim 817 Caboose, with Latch Couplers, in nice shape, here on the over head Tracks.  The 2nd one with Orange Window Trim, in the Back Shop awaiting my attention.  The 2 - 817 Flat Green on Dark Green Cabooses were a great addition to my 817 Consist, I had neither 817 Caboose in these particular colors.

Looks like I just won this pile of crap.   I know it is not that great, but I was looking for a 483 crane and gee, its basically two whole sets plus some Chrome Marx signals for $55..  The 3/16ths set is missing the 561 loco, but I have a couple of those so no problem.

This is a bit of a hybrid, but since it is powered by tinplate, I'll post it here.

This is a Marx Riser Gear windup motor, but as you might have noticed, there is a bit of extra mechanism at the front.  The motor is basically stock with the exception of a lot of extra gearing to make the governor spin faster.... and since the governor can only spin so fast, it means the motor runs considerably slower than stock.  A lot slower.  Since the gearing between the mainspring and drive axle is stock, the pulling power and running distance is comparable to a stock Marx Riser Gear motor.  A stock motor like this will complete 5 laps of my mainline in a bit less than a minute.  This motor takes nearly 8 minutes to cover the same distance.

Why is it a hybrid?  Because I installed it in a Lionel #8796 diesel switch engine shell... a plastic shell... 

It sure is fun to see it putter around the layout:

Not bad Dennis, I have seen the flea market guys list one signal and a bent piece of track for that much. 

Of course theirs is "RARE AND VINTAGE". I have often thought of starting a topic called "REALLY????"

on here so people could post some of the absurdly priced items they see online. Like the guy who

keeps relisting the rusty marx 6" frame for 69.99 or the one who keeps listing the common flying

yankee set for $3500. I made him an offer of $75, he got upset. hehe

USTTC made a series of club cars and a engine for TTCS. They made one a year. I had all but the 1981 boxcar until a couple of years ago when I found one for $63.00. Took to a TCA meet for show and tell and have not seen it since. Just got a replacement for $11.00. Now that I have replaced it, I’m sure I’ll find the other one.

This just showed up at the front door. It needed a little cleaning, the steam chest cylinders were loose and some lube. I added a bridge rectifier and put it on the track. Runs great and very smooth. Hopefully I'll win the original matching cars for it this weekend

Well, here is my latest venture into the world of the bay.  "9615 boxed Sears Allstate set, complete, VG, and running."

Not, not and not. I emailed the seller back and suggested if she was going to list a set as complete, it should be.

Also if she was going to list it as very good, all components should be very good. And if she listed it as running it

should be running. Her response : "we're an estate liquidation company, we don't know anything about trains.

The guy  who listed this doesn't work here anymore. " This is one of these companies that says "we'll make it

right" (or we'll make excuses). So far I have not heard back.

Well I am thoroughly enjoying my new red Mth 261.  I do have a question to anyone else who has an Mth tinplate repro?  Does anyone else’s engine make a gear whine noise as it speeds up?  At any speed over 35 scale mph I can hear a whining noise that soon drowns out the loco sounds.  I have applied some grease to the exposed gears but it hasn’t really made a difference.  Has anyone else experienced this, can it be corrected?

I am late in catching up with this topic, and I am not sure this qualifies as either "bought" or "lately," but I sure think it is cool. 

While primarily a low-grade S gauge operator/collector, I do enjoy my modest collection of Marx 6" tinplate trains, toys and accessories.  It has been years since I found a really interesting train at a thrift store or flea market, but I occasionally find myself accompanying my wife to one or the other.  To give myself something to look for, I seek out tinplate candy and cookie tins and the like that I think can look good on a tinplate setup.

At some time last year, I must have mentioned this to my sister who is an experienced thrift shopper, both for her own use and for vintage items to sell in her own shop. 

I was already the envy of the room when it turned out that this great old train (actually airline) case under the tree turned out to be my gift from her.

Actually the tall can in the first pic was a gift from my other sister who hosted the Christmas get together and was a co-conspirator in the hunt.   What's more, each can contained an additional small gift.  Not only a great tinplate acquisition, but very easy to pack for the trip back to Oregon.

Santa post man brought me  Lionel Jr 1700E red and silver streamliner today. 

Seller said he had cleaned and lubed it, so when I unpacked it I took it

in and put it on the layout.  Turned on the power and poof, sparks and smoke. 

I don't think 1700e's are sparkler locos or have smoke units so I turned it off

immediately. I slowly turned it back on and got the hum of death from the 

transformer. I tried moving some of the old wires around, didn't work. 

Dead short. I took the motor out and found some deteriorating insulating.

Put some tape on that, no help. I noticed the e-unit was partially out of the 

frame, no screws. I think the e-unit got jostled in shipping and got something

grounded that was not supposed to be. The train was packed very well, so 

I can't fault the seller. I finally ended up removing the e unit completely

and the train runs fine. I think the e unit fried the moment I turned on

the power.

I definitely have the collector gene.  I like to think that I have been able to keep it under control, however, the urge to add to the collection can become quite demanding.  I recently decided I "needed" to fill in some of the missing pieces in the Northwoods Flyer Collection.  So, I have started to look for American Flyer's 6 1/2" lithographed passenger cars that have their numbers lithographed on the side (yes there are versions without the number too).  I already have quite a few of them, but as I look at the Greenberg Guide there are so many more that I don't have.   And so the hunt begins; and hopefully I will be able to limit the collecting urge to just these cars (for now).  They often show up as single cars and are not too expensive when purchased as singles, and in operator condition.

As an example I recently picked up this #1205 Baggage car in blue with Type IV trucks.

And then I came across the #1306 in blue with Type IV trucks

And of course they look great together.

The next example could show up at anytime!

Got brave and tried to make a removable scrap load for my NPR gondola. Cut a piece of polystyrene to fit the gondola and affixed it to a piece of foam to raise it up so I didn't have so much area to fill. painted it black and started gluing pieces of plastic scrap and brass and aluminum tubing to it. A little detail paint and...

I have a PS2 260e and do not have that problem. Make sure something isn't bent or binding. The side rods should be loose. Turn her over and make sure none got bent.

Looks original, but it is a repaint. $50.00 in Silver Hall. Best price I saw all day. Since it’s for my new tinplate layout at the museum I would have bought one that was a basketcase to repaint. This will need very little work.

Yes, cutting the trim was a little problematic. The casting did not lend itself to this very well. Maybe I should have cut it from the back, but then the edge wouldn't be straight. The brass casting is fluted, which creates some of these issues.

My next project is a 814R Goetz Beer reefer. I started stripping the paint today. Here is the doner car I bought:

I am using an aerosol can stripper. This car was way different than the newer MTH cars I have stripped. After 60 to 90 seconds, the paint lifted off the tin in a sheet! Painting is in progress and decals are designed and in production.

Colors are rattlecan Krylon cover MAXX Georgia Clay Gloss and Rustoleum Sunburst Yellow.  I used Krylon Gray Primer. This tin would not paint without a primer.

Well it was a pain to get to.  The gears had a minimum amount of lube so I added some grease.  It still makes way too much noise as far as I am concerned.  There is no bottom plate under the gears to form an actual gearbox. Everything was going great until assembly. I thought it would be best to assemble the shell before masking and painting the ends of the yellow sides. Wrong. Also, my yellow paint was not hard enough, and I damaged a spot on the side trying to put the doors on. When I masked the yellow, the tape ruined my finish, then the clay colored paint wrinkled the yellow. I mounted the shell too soon on the frame and could not get the door hangers tight. Now my doors are loose! I would strip it and start over, but I'm afraid I will break tabs. I am half tempted to sell this one as is and start over. These refrigerator cars are a bit of a pain. 

At least the roof looks good!

I feel your pain George! It is so frustrating to start a repaint/refurb and have it go south. I am my own worst enemy though, sometimes I get so anxious to see a project come together that I push it a little too hard and make mistakes. Oh well, try, try again...

I don't Steve, but I see some disadvantages on trains. First, a powder coating finish needs to be 300 microns or greater. This can be a problem on the tabs and the fit and assembly of the parts and trim. Second, it requires 390 degree F heat to cure. It's not really a "do it yourself" job, which will add a lot of cost to a small project. Lastly, I perceive it's hard to mask off an area of a part for a different color.

Yep, that little door is in the oven. The paints need much longer to cure before masking and painting a second color. I have had this problem before. With the yellow, it really needs a week before assembly, unless you can do it gently, which is a big risk. Also, I think the thinner in the rattle cans is a very aggressive solvent. The Naptha I use with my airbrush works much better. I am going to fix this one as best as possible and make a second, learning from my mistakes.

Nope. Both are enamel. Even painting the same paint over itself caused a problem. With Rustoleum x2, I have not had this problem, I think because it includes a primer. The Krylon MAXX is supposed to have a primer in it, but it did not work. The cans talk about 48 hours or less than 2 minutes between coats, but I have not had to wait that long before when using an oven. I have proof that the rattle can thinner is the main culprit, because I bought the same enamel in the non-spray form, and I can brush that on without a problem, even if I thin it some with Naptha.

Also, a bit surprising that the blue painters tape damaged the finish too. I am sure this was due to the paint not being fully cured, but I am also reading that these tape adhesives try to "bond" with the paint to maintain an edge. On my next job, I plan to mask the primer and not try to paint over finished enamel. I also plan to not try to mask and paint assembled parts. Just learning as I go here...

I have been fiddling with the car trying to fix or reduce the noticeability of my mistakes. I was able to tighten the door hangers and handles with epoxy from behind. I bought yellow paint in a can to brush on. It is looking better. No more mistakes, I am waiting 24 hours to do the other side. 

I have enough decals for three cars and plan to make one more once I find a suitable donor car.

Nice looking work George! Ya got me thinking, so got started on putting together a custom paint 800 series freight set from junkers.  It's bright but looks pretty good on the rails- if you like green. Apple green with 601 Pullman green roof and black cupola. The yellow window paint is original. Only two tabs broke on the main body, so solder was an easy fix. Next up will be either a 804 or 831. Decisions, decisions, what color next?

I hope we aren't driving up the price of 2814r cars. I saw a plain MTH go for $93 on eBay yesterday! I got in before the market ticked up and got mine in the mid-fifties. There are always deals to be had if you are willing to work a bit, though. I picked up and beat up original yesterday for $35! Seller should have used an auction...

that's cause I've been busy putting the runner back together and the one time I ebayed I got a car from Steve Eastman. Put some more time in your Falcon....you need more hole in yer head like I do Dennis.... Although with all the Flyer cars that have been showing up at my door I might hafta get serious about looking for a locomotive for them....

Saving Tinplate One Piece at a Time

At the TTOS SW Division meet today I picked up this really sharp Lionel 251 with original box. Consulting my new Greenberg Guide (Lionel O Gauge Volume I: 1915-1928), I found it is the 1929 variant with Type 6 motor. It looks to be original except for having Bowser replacement wheels installed along with some new wires inside. Whomever installed the wheels did a nice job, but the replacements are a spoked variety instead of the original disc type. It runs great, the pendulum type reverse unit works perfectly. It appears to have had very low mileage-  it has the phenolic intermediate gears, but they look to be in perfect shape. Interestingly however it's so tall that (in common with my Lionel 256) it doesn't quite fit under all of the "low clearances" on the layout. Inside the box was an original instruction sheet. See photos below.

Consulting my new Greenberg Guide (Lionel O Gauge Volume I: 1915-1928), I found it is the 1929 variant with Type 6 motor. It looks to be original except for having Bowser replacement wheels installed along with some new wires inside. Whomever installed the wheels did a nice job, but the replacements are a spoked variety instead of the original disc type. It runs great, the pendulum type reverse unit works perfectly. It appears to have had very low mileage-  it has the phenolic intermediate gears, but they look to be in perfect shape. Interestingly however it's so tall that (in common with my Lionel 256) it doesn't quite fit under all of the "low clearances" on the layout. Inside the box was an original instruction sheet.
