Had to send my legacy Blue comet and my Legacy RS 11 back to Lionel for service because the smoke units were not working. To my surprise Mike reagan called last night at about 7:30

to tell me that the Blue Comet problem was due to me putting too much smoke  fluid in

the engine and he told me that on start up it sometimes takes a few runs around the layout before the fluid in the reservoir gets up to the smoke unit.So we should let the Engine run a bit before deciding to add fluid. The RS 11 had a bad smoke unit.He is also going to add the new whistle to the Blue Comet.

I must say Iam impressed

If you leave the smoke unit turned on with no fluid, there will be damage. As Hot Water stated, the wick will be burned at the very least. The element will also probably get covered with residue from the burnt wick. In extreme case it is possible that the heating element could also suffer damage from overheating without anything to absorb/transfer the heat away.

There are warnings in the locomotive manuals about this.
