The variable channels can be used conventional or can be programmed fixed like the other two channels.  You should be able to do what ever you want.

You can only assign one TIU channel output at a time to a track. You cannot have both a variable channel and a fixed channel connected to the same tracks at the same time.

Having said that, yes, you can operate any conventional and also any DCS engine engine on the same track that's connected to a variable channel, even at the same time.

Because I am a looper, I have run my PW engines on the same track with my command engine train.  I load up the PW train with cars such that at about 15-15 volts it runs at a normal speed.  I can then have run my command trains and match the speed with the hand controller.  Before I gave my Pw roster to my son, I did think it was kind of nice to see trains built 60 years apart running on the same track.
