Hey Guys,

I have a nice beginner set of Marx tinplate cars, with 2-wheel trucks, and hook & tab couplers.  The couplers are attached with a single rivet underneath the frame.

I would like to add two nice passenger cars.   Most of the nicer looking passengers, though, have four wheel trucks, and the couplers are attached to and swivel with the trucks.

Assuming that I convert the passenger couplers to hook & tab, would I be able to mix these passenger cars in a train with the smaller cars with the 2-wheel trucks?  Or will the heavier 4-wheel trucks pull the lighter 2-wheel trucks off of the rails (derail) on turns etc.

Thanks for all advice.

I think it would work fine.    You might have the weight issue mentioned above.

Now a question:

Do your original cars have 2 wheel trucks, or just 2 axles?    And do the passenger cars really have 4 wheel trucks, or 4 axle in 2 two rail trucks?

I am think your originals are like bobber cabooses, simply 2 axles and the passenger have a 2 axle truck at each end.

Egon: Don’t run four wheel and eight wheel cars in the same train.
Peter: Why?
Egon: It would be bad.
Peter: I’m fuzzy on the whole good/bad thing. What do you mean “bad”?
Egon: Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.
Raymond: Total protonic reversal.
Peter: That’s bad. Okay. Alright, important safety tip, thanks Egon.

Or something like that.
