Has anyone changed out the original motor in a Flyer loco for a can motor from, say, Port Lines Hobby and, if so, what are the pros and cons as opposed to just replacing a bad field coil which seem to be in short supply locally. Is the can motor and Dalee reverse a satisfactory alternative to finding and using another Gilbert motor and is the cost worth the end result. Any input much appreciated.

Rich is correct and it is a simple job and I am something of a hack when it comes to repairs. It does eliminate the fussy reverse unit and provides smoother operation. The  only thing I would have done differently is get the slower speed motor to get more voltage to the smoke unit at slower speeds.

 

It was worth the money to me since I rebuilt an engine from parts from a couple of junkers but the cost factor is a personal choice.  

Some folks have the double worm motor (the slow speed motor) and some do not. I converted a Hudson and a K-5 several years ago to can motors and they run great. This was before the electronic E-units became widely available, so I rewired the Flyer E-unit to run the DC motor. They atill have the fussy E-unit problems, but they certainly run well.
