I have a PS1 engine from our club layout that I am trying to get to run. I put a new battery in and when power up in PS1 mode  clanks then engine sounds come on. Horn and bell do not respond and reverse button will not get it moving just sits on track with engine sounds. Have tried factory resets a few times with TIU and different transformers. And tried different batteries though all read good volts when charged. Tried using the PS1 reset chip any other suggestions? Looked over a few past posts on PS1 issues?

Possible that the PS1 chip got scrambled beyond the ability of the reset kit.  You can confirm this if you can swap in a different PS1 chip from another PS1 engine to see if you get a normal start and the ability to move normally fwd and back.  For the quick test you might be able to use either diesel/steam/gas type engine chip.

So what is the fix if the locked or the chip is scrambled? Am I able to buy a new one? or have to send it for repair. No Lionel repair in our area will have to mail it somewhere to fix?

My info is based on my experience with a premier sd70mac which had a weak battery that resulted in being stuck in neutral/reset mode with engine revs adjusting to voltage. As I posted in one of the other recent ps1 threads, I tried the mth reset chip without success because the original sd70mac ps1 sound chip scrambled. I confirmed the chip was scrambled by swapping another ps1 chip (they come out easily with the chip puller) and the loco powered up and operated normally. I then obtained a replacement sd70mac ps1 chip for about $15 from another forum member; installed it; all’s working well.

Someone posted mth parts’ ps1 chip price is $40.  IMHO that’s a little pricey for a 20+yr. chip. FWIW if patient, there are numerous ps1 (both railking & premier new/used) available at around $100 or less.  So if your model is not a rare type you might want to cruise the auction sites and/or post a request for the specified ps1 chip on the “wanted to buy” forum for an acceptable and cheaper replacement.

The three clanks are repaired using the repair chip that's been available for some time.  MTH Techs have additional resources to reset other issues with PS/1 boards as well.  However, knowing the EXACT symptoms is necessary before making recommendations.

There are also replacement chips available that avoid some of the issues with early chips, they're $30.
