I have been wanting to add some passenger cars to several of my MTH Tinplate engines. I know 2600 series cars work well for the 263E's. However the 1600 series cars have smaller trucks and won't couple to the larger engines. So I would like to know how I can find out what passenger cars will play nice with one another and what ones don't. Anyone here just know the answer or can refer me to a guide on the Internet?

I wish I had a ready answer but I am still learning myself.  I know 600 series cars work well with smaller loco’s like the 259e up to midsize engines such as 261 or 262e.   The 2600 series cars work well with big engines like the 260e/ 263e / 249e.  I am not familiar with the 1600 series.  I do have a set of 710 series cars that were made for the 256 dual motored electric.  I run the 710’s with both my 261e and 263e loco’s.  They are a little oversized for the 261 but they are both Bright Red so it looks right to me.  I look forward to those with much more knowledge than me chiming in.

The T&M Prewar O Book and the Greenberg Prewar O Sets Books (More Comprehensive) provide pretty good listing of what engines and cars were paired together. Probably an old price guide might give you the info you are looking for. For internet searching, using Google, look at IMAGES, and this may link you to Auction sites from past events or Pinterest. It always amazes me the number of uncataloged set variations that were produced. My favorite is the Red Comet 264 with the Ives transition cars!
