I won this on eBay just this morning; here is a photo I took off the listing:

As (I hope!) you can see by the photo, it has very nice details, including "open" spoke drivers and brake shoes, although non-Pennsy valve gear. It shows a Lionel-type drawbar, so I can only assume it was made before tenders with sound(?) The tender was not included in the sale...

I've checked other listings for 2-8-0s, and have found nothing that matches; the nearest I can find, detail-wise, are some "3rd Rail" models, which I know nothing about.

It's my hope that, upon arrival, there will be some sort of "builder's plate" on the bottom to identify the maker...in the meantime, any guesses?

Thanks!

"although non-Pennsy valve gear"

It is?

This is a TMCC Odyssey locomotive.  All of the electronics are in the tender.  I have never tried running mine without the tender.  Good luck.

Unless the loco is too small, only the sound electronics are in the tender on modern Lionel steamers; the running electronics (TMCC/Odyssey) are in the locomotive and they can run without the tender. No sound, of course. If you have a wireless (IR) tether, only the sound is in the tender, as the wireless tether is a data link and transmits no electrical current for the motor, etc. If you have a "hard tether", it can be used for anything. (This is why the MTH "wireless" tether isn't, really.)

Looks exactly like a Pennsy Walschaerts valve gear to me!

If you have a TMCC base you can try and see if the locomotive will run with it... then you can find out if the locomotive is in fact a TMCC locomotive because most TMCC engines have all of the TMCC components in the engine, and just the sound unit in the tender.  It won’t hurt the locomotive either because all that’s happening is that there won’t be any sound coming from the tender.
