I have an old 4 4 2 steam engine ,Lionel PRR 8304, that because of it's age and old e unit is constantly in motion when the power is on. Is it possible to switch that out with one that has neutral in it? Also a small issue with it going over switches. I have tubular track and it does fine on my 027's and making a turn on my 042's  but if I send it straight over my 042's it triggers the e unit to reverse the direction. Your thoughts.

Your locomotive is probably an MPC era one with a 2 position mechanical E-unit.  You should be able to replace it with a 3 position E-unit.

The unwanted reversing issue is probably due to poor conductivity, either in the track or in the loco, causing a momentary drop in power that activates the E-unit.  Try thoroughly cleaning all the wheels and the rollers, as well as the switch rails, and see if that helps.  If not, try locking out the E-unit unless you need to do reversing.

Good luck!  Hope this helps.
