I was hoping a C&NW fan could help me with prototype information for the 1937 AAR Steel Double Door (Auto) Boxcar that Atlas O will be re-releasing later this year.

The car has a number in the 57000 series.  See Atlas rendering of car below:

Atlas O 3001802 CNW

I have checked every possible online resource using all kinds of search terms and have come up cold.  It is the only boxcar in my fleet that I don't have any prototype information.

I was hoping someone could check their copies of "C&NW Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Cars Vols. 1 and 2" to see if a photo and description of this car is available.

I like to keep a roster of prototype information for all my freight and passenger cars, home and foreign road, on a spreadsheet.

What I would like to know is any of the following:

1. Car Manufacturer

2. Build Date Year(s)

3. Car Number Series (low and high)

4. Number of cars built

5. Any special note about: paint scheme - such as when paint scheme was first introduced or time span of paint scheme and/or when cars were last on the home road's roster

Thanks in advance for providing any information on this car.

Thanks Gene.

It makes sense that this is not a 1937 AAR design car.  The chairman of C&NWHS indicated that this car series was built in 1949 but since the society did not have a photo of the car, that is all they could tell me about it.

I did find a photo (see below) of what a suspect is a car from the same series, albeit, the photo was taken long after the 1950s, the period I model.

I am OK with the Atlas car not being an exact match.  I understand manufacturers' limitations with tooling costs.  I have my limits to though.  I won't purchase a 10' height boxcar that is supposed to represent a PRR X-29 or say other related 1923 ARA boxcars, unless it is an X-29B for example.  But in this case, it appears to me that the 1937 AAR is a reasonable fascimile to the 1949 C&NW Auto Boxcar.

That being the case, still hoping someone can tell me more about this boxcar series.

Gene,

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Once knowing it was a Pullman Standard car, I was able to refine my online search.

For anyone interested, below are the stats for this car:

Built 1949 by Pullman Standard per PS-1 design

54700 - 57898 series, even nos. only

Quantity - 250

15 foot double door opening

CNW ordered over 10,000 PS-1s in single and double door configurations.

There is a great article in Railmodel Journal March 1993 accessible on the Trainlife website.

Unless Lionel makes tooling for a double door version of their 40' PS-1 single door boxcar, it looks like we will have to get by with this Atlas offering.  Although, as I understand it, Pullman didn't make many double door versions so probably not likely that Lionel will bother.
