I recently built a 4x8 oval fastrack on the carpet, track only right now ( which I doubt will  last). I'm having fun with it.

Wondering the size of others and details added to layout.   Quiet compared to basement version.

Here's mine,

Carpet Lionel , top A/F ( throws laid over plastic table (actually surprisingly quiet).

Simple double oval no switches, run two lionchief engines.  This is where the Christmas tree goes. Limited to just a bit of buildings. Since this is in the living room, wife factor has to be taken into account.  So using lighted cars, and other cars of interest to my grandson. For instance my son just bought an excavator, so I bought a flatcar with working excavator. Also the lighted passenger cars and caboose add to the fun at night.  Other fun

can be have a race, running in opposite directions, or trying to speed match both engines. I just started with lionchief in January, after deciding my HO setup was just not all that much fun for little kids. Lionchief control is great.

Beachhead2,

Now that is a great test track, what happens when you purchase a big scale Engine?

Never say never but it hasn't happened yet!  I'm strictly diesel (except for Std. Gauge ) so there will be no big steamer issues on my O layout.  My newest O engine is a Lionel SD60M (6-84563 From 2017 Vol. 1 catalog).  It's a LC+ engine but a pretty long diesel.  The shell is exactly the same as the Legacy SD60M.  Minimum curve is O36.  It didn't look great on the curves but it ran fine.  My layout plan is a little more forgiving, O48 & O60 loops so it will look better there.  I'd go bigger but that's what the space allows.
