Having run O guage for years, I finally figured out a way to add a loop to run Flyer trains on the layout.  I chose GarGraves flex track, because of  the highly irregular shape necessitated by fitting it around the existing track.

Black gunk pretty quickly builds up on the rail head.  Is it caused by the track or the trains?  I run a mix of Gilbert and Flyonel.

It's not a problem: The trains run well, but I was just wondering, as this is my first experience running Flyer aside from on a temporary basis.

It's kind of both and it occurs on all brands of track to some degree.  The gunk is a combination of dirt, both on the rail and in the air and oils deposited from the trains.  It's practically a natural occurrence.

Even after cleaning the track, after a few minutes you'll pick up black gunk with a clean paper towel.

It's more noticeable on Gargraves because of the flatter railhead.
