Here is one from the (distant) past - 1957 I think it was of my Dad and me near New Orleans

A Gilbert Flyer Santa Fe PA with 'diesel roar', several aluminum cars, a large transformer,  and a new log loader. Dad had found someone who dealt in used trains and that year Santa dropped of a surprising amount of stuff - way beyond our usual budget!

My Christmas train usually consists of a Lionel 627, 44 ton red diesel, Lionel 36743 Operating Santa Claus Bobbing Head Box car, two flat cars with Santa’s reindeer including Rudolph and one flat car with two reindeer and Santa’s sled and the fat man himself, a “CANDY” labeled gondola with Christmas Candy Canes, and a Lionel 26527 Christmas Work Caboose with Christmas gifts.

I added a Santa, sled and 8 reindeer plus Rudolph the red nosed reindeer to my Christmas train.  I made the reindeer cars from three junker Scout sized flat cars and figures and reindeer from a Hallmark Cards Santa, Sled and Reindeer set.  I painted the flat cars white as reindeer like snow and will show up better with a light color.

One car carried the Santa sled and two reindeer, a second car carried four reindeer and third car carried two reindeer and Rudolph the red nosed reindeer.  The reindeer were simply glued to the flat cars with 5 min epoxy glue.

The original Hallmark Cards Santa sled was too big so a smaller one was made from balsa wood and sized for Hallmark Cards Santa.

A blinking red light was installed in Rudolf’s nose and a power pick up was added to the car.

The Christmas Train is usually stationed on the hidden track behind the background and comes out by surprise for the kids after watching the trains run for a few minutes.  They all love the Christmas Train, Santa and the reindeer and of course the Christmas candy canes in the gondola!

What a great memento to have!

My son put a very austere layout underneath the tree in the living room this year:  a loop of FasTrack and a NYC milk train.  Here is a short video of our latest rescue dog (mentioned elsewhere, taken in July 6) watching the train.  Unfortunately, she did NOT like the whistle; son doesn't blow it anymore so as not to upset her.

...........and then somewhere it is written  "  less is more  ".

Nice warm and cozy Christmas scene sir.   Nice you rescued a little creature that is able to enjoy your company on a day like this.

The setup is similar to last year's window layout. We did borrow a couple of new ideas from the forum including using a felt covering instead of buffalo snow on the surface and adding dimension to the mountains by doubling up carved insulated panels. Also added a few more trees and extra people. Running the MTH lighted nativity flat cars with Rudolph and Santa's sleigh in the rear. After starting out with nothing but Christmas trains and cars, these are the only Christmas cars we still have. Being the reason for the season, we think they are perfect. The K-Line Southern steam engine needs a bell, but it goes with the green flat cars. Bought this from a forum member at York 4 or 5 years ago for $100. It never got used because it shorted out too frequently when going through switches, or in reverse around a curve. Figured we'd try it on a small oval going full speed straight ahead! Awesome.

Last Christmas run of the year.  I’m late taking down the tree so I decided to let one more of my post-war Lionel’s take a few more turns around the tree.  This one takes us back to 1952 with a battle scarred 671rr pulling a consist of post-war freight cars.  Despite its age the old 671rr still smokes and pulls well.  This was my third post-war consist of the season.  The first was pullled by a 675 from 1946 while the second was hauled by my Dad’s 1655 from 1948.  They all ran extremely well.😃

As long as OKhiker kept this thread alive. I just received these 3 Nativity cars today. The caboose arrived on Monday. The boxcar arrived just before Christmas. I had assembled a whole Christmas train to use at the clubhouse; but that’s Santa based for the kids. I’ll be running this at home next Christmas. Hopefully Lionel will get the A5 out. I have the Christmas version on order from METCA. I think that these cars are beautiful!
