Hello,

Did Central Locomotive Workshop (CLW) include *Brass* C-C trucks with their O-Scale SD-40 kit or did CLW use *"white metal"* C-C trucks?

Also, Did CLW make only C-C Flexcoil (early SD-35/38/40/45 '68 -'74) trucks for their kits and/or did they make C-C HT-C (Later types of SD-40/45 '74 to '96) trucks?

Could anyone send me a PDF copy of the CLW SD-40 kit assembly sheets to help clear up my questions?

I have 2 unbuilt and complete SD-40/45 brass kits (Central Locomotive Works and Locomotive Workshop) where I have 3 different sets of EMD C-C trucks that were included.

Two of the EMD C-C truck sets are Flexcoil sideframes and all made of "white metal" and 1 set of EMD C-C trucks are HT-C style all made of brass.

The Locomotive Workshop kit instructions I have show the use of "white metal" trucks and I know the CLW has used "white metal" for trucks in the past because I own a CLW FA-1B that uses "white metal" AAR Type B trucks. I am missing the CLW assembly sheet and parts list that were not included in my eBay purchase.

Matching the Trucks Bolsters to the frame mount does not give me any clues and I cannot seem to find any pics on the Internet that show a completed CLW SD-40 kit with clear truck details...

Do you know the answer to CLW brass/whitemetal truck questions?

Thanks, Steve

It sound to me like you are mixing up Central Locomotive Works (CLW) with Locomotive Workshop (LW).  To my knowledge LW never produced a kit for an SD loco.  CLW did and all CLWdiesle  trucks were assembled from lost wax brass castings.  LW did use soft metal castings for truck sideframes on the diesels that they did produce.  There is a huge difference in quality between CLW and LW products.  CLW produced first rate kits that finish into beautiful models.

All the CLW (Central Locomotive Workshop) kits I have seen since way back in the 80s, had cast brass trucks.   Also, All the ones I am familiar with built-up had cast brass.

Now obviously this is a narrow perspective, but I think indicative based on train shows and visiting layouts.

I don't have any CLW diesels, but I have 2 CLW steamers (2-8-0) including one very old model, and all detail parts are brass.    The tenders do have wood floors but all visible parts are brass.   The newer model for which I bought the kit new in the early 80s has some sort of glass/plastic driver centers on the loco, but again, all other detail parts are brass.    The rods are something else, but not soft metal.

At shows when Bob Smith still ran CLW, he always had a table filled with cast brass parts, he never had any soft metal castings.

"Old Goat" suggested, "Check with the Research Desk at the NMRA Kalmbach Memorial Library."

I thought the NMRA was mainly interested in O-Gauge 3-Rail, not O-Scale 1:48 or Proto 1:45... <GRIN>

Anyway, I tried calling their NMRA Kalmbach Memorial Library staff at phone# 423-894-8144 but the line is continually busy.

I emailed 'Lib@hq.nmra.org' and am awaiting an email reply from them.

There is no confision here...

Locomotive Workshop (Jan Lorenzen) indeed did make a SD35/40/SDP40/45 kit because I have one and have the printed assembly instructions that clearly state they are from Locomotive Workshop.

I finally found the CLW SD40-2 info that I needed...  The CLW SD40-2 did come with a cast brass C-C HT-c truck set.

Enclosed is a pic of the original CLW SD40-2 product announcement, but I still do not have the OEM OEM assembly instructions...

How did I find this arcane info? I used a Google search to find the info with keywords CLW AND emd AND sd40-2 and "giants of the west"  on a Japanese website forum post in 2007.

I finally found & bought from eBay the full set of Central Locomotive Works (CLW) SD-40 Assembly Instructions.

I digitized all 19 pages (14 text + 5 assembly drawings) and saved them in a single PDF format that is 7.2mb in size.  I doubt that OGR will allow this 7mb size file to be posted to this forum due to its file size.

If you want a *free* PDF copy of these OEM CLW SD40 plans, just email me though this forum and I can send by email to you. Please note I do not make any profit from this... I believe in sharing info like this to further the Brass modelers hobby and attract new Hobbyists for non-commercial, non-profit, and only personal use.

This PDF file is virus free when I created it on 3/4/2015 and scanned with no virus or malware present.
