Hello All,

So after putting a few cars behind my newly acquired CMC #89, I notice it would sit on the track and not move. Upon further inspection I can see the geared axle is spinning but the drive wheels aren't. Basically the holes in the wheels are too big. This is the second CMC engine I own like this. Was this a common problem with these trains? Also it looks like the axles is too short and barely has enough meat to grab onto the wheels.

Thank you,

Sam

Sounds like some JB weld on the axles or some home brew "knurling" using a pair of side cuts, then reinstall the wheels is needed to "lock" them to the axle.

And that's the one idea, JB weld, a little bit of good luck and hopefully we're up and running. I was able to press two wheels on yesterday and thought I had it. I even quartered it with no issues. However as soon as I attached cars to it one if the wheels started slipping on the axle again. The other is rock solid, great, but we'll still need either new wheels, new axles or both to make everything factory new.

So this didn't work too well. The JB weld didn't hold, so I'm thinking about brazing the wheel to the axle. Does that sound completely crazy?

Use side cutters and squeeze little indents at an angle on 3 places equidistant along the axle. Dull cutters will work fine.  You dont want to bend the axle or cut through...obviously... just to deform the metal a bit.  Grooving radially does not add grip...it reduces the parting surface area, and so has a slight opposite effect.

So just to follow up on this. For the #12 I got 4 new wheels from Harry Hennings, pressed them on and it's running real nice around the track. My eccentric crank rod bolts are make shift but they seem to be doing the job.

For the 89, I tried to knurl the axles and it worked on 1 side but not too well on the other. I may just buy 6 new wheels from Harry but I'm still looking into home brew ideas.

I received two CMC engines the past couple of weeks and both have slightly loose drivers. One has slight zinc pest which would explain the problem, but they are still usable. I will try and score the axles when I tear it down to add a rectifier.

I have a third one coming in this week. I won the auction the other night of the limited edition chrome set that was never assembled. I'm hoping those drivers are still in good shape.
