Good Morning,

A while back I got the idea that, with some tinkering, I could save myself some money and get some really nice locomotives if I was to buy an older vintage (90's) MTH or Williams Loco, strip out and replace the electronics with "Electric Railroad company" command control boards and sound cards. Now I did this with a small Lionel 0-8-0 from a set and it worked famously. I have since found and bought an MTH Premier 3-rail Hudson J1e circa 1994 as well as an ERR Cruise Commander board and sound card. Does anyone see any problem with me stripping the electronics out of the Hudson and installing the ERR card(s)? I'm not very knowledgeable about electronics but I can follow directions.

Thanks for any and all suggestions / comments

I stripped the PS1 guts from an MTH Milwaukee Hudson. Easy to do and does not take an electrical engineer to do the work. ERR instructions are straight forward, plus if you run into an issue, you can always call them and talk to Ken. He's very helpful and always willing to walk you though any issues. He doesn't work a full day, lucky him. He is there from about 9 AM to 2 PM Pacific time.

Good luck.

One thing. The antenna. Some modelers insulate the tender shell from the frame. I decided that I wanted a "real" coal load. So I cut out the fake coal load with my Dremel tool. Glued a piece of plastic under the opening and installed the antenna on top of the plastic. Then I added my model coal and glued it with white glue. No issues with reception even from over 30 feet away.

Since the TMCC antenna has no connection to the range of the remote, that really doesn't tell us anything.
