CSX and Norfolk Southern today are the two main Railroads east of the Mississippi. I would like to start a conversation about how these two railroads are similar, how they are different, and which in your opinion is the stronger/better operation. This is not meant to be a thread about history or rail fanning, but actually looking at the Railroads operations and routes as our topic of discussion. If this goes well I'll do a Union Pacific and BNSF thread later, maybe we'll even compare some fallen flags.

My opinion is that they are pretty well matched in terms of routes. In particular here is my analysis

The South - modest Norfolk Southern advantage, despite lagging around Tennessee and the Florida/Gulf cost

Midwest/West of PA - slight CSX, NS comes close when you factor in both Cleveland - Chicago routes of the NYC and the Nickel Plate, so it could very well be a tie or slight Norfolk Southern advantage.

PA - Norfolk Southern, that was easy

NY - CSX, they have the former New York Central line, while Norfolk Southern has the former EL and now the D&H

In terms of financial standing, quality of service, etc I don't know.

So have at it.

It's a mixed bag for me. As an EMD fan I agree with willygee, NS takes the edge there. Ditto for their Heritage Fleet and Steam programs.

However, I quickly get tired of black diesels. (A hangover from the Penn Central days of my teen years.)

CSX is my local road, with two moderately busy subdivisions within 15-20 minutes of my home. There is a fair bit of UP and BNSF run through power, which is a relief. Otherwise it's a nearly unbroken parade of "if you've seen one, you've seen 'em all" GE bricks.

I see the CSX every day,  I rails I ride on are CSX rails and are also used by Amtrak, and VRE. The engines are decently clean and the track is first class. the Right of way needs some major work, from years of tearing apart the old Potomac yard there is thousands of torn up old ties and rail from DC to Richmond VA.

The NS line closest to me is in Manasas VA. Of what I have see both and have good looking equipment and are somewhat clean, that line not seen often, I wish I was closer to view all the Heritage units, Have not seen one yet, that should tell you how much I get out there. I model both. evenly I believe.
