I have a Lionel Thomas the Tank starter set with remote.  The box has no part number on it ?  It says nothing about Lionelchief on the box.  The remote lights up but doesn't transmit (verified).  Does anyone know if the Lionel's Universal Remote is a replacement ?  Probably purchased this in 2014.  Coupler is a Series 1.  Instruction manual is dated 2012.  Thomas is not listed on Universal Remote compatibility list but that list is only for Lionelchief products I think?   Thanks in advance.

Thanks for responding.  I suspected no compatibility.   Do you know how to open the Thomas remote control ?  I don't see any screws.

You are getting incorrect information.  As long as the Lionchief Universal Remote is upgraded to firmware 1.1 (you can do this yourself), it will control your locomotive.

Thanks for replying.  I was hoping to buy the Universal Remote and I can always update it to firmware 1.1.  I saw the compatibility list for firmware 1.1 and Thomas was not on the exception list.  Good I thought.  However,  I have one of the early Thomas & Friends Sets.  There is no part number on the box.  No Lionchief mentioned on the box either.  There is a model number on the remote:  6307016600.  Since firmware 1.1 compatibility qualifier is "all Lionchief except", I'm not sure if my remote is actually Lionchief ?   I can't find reference to the above remote model number anywhere ?  Any help would be appreciated.

I traced the 6307016600 Thomas & Friends Remote Controller part number to the FCC EMI testing documents LIV-TNFTX2G4.  The report and attachments are on-line.    The documents appear to be the EMI testing for the first FCC approval of the  2.4 GHz Thomas remote controller.  The FCC UUT had a different color and shape than the produced baby blue controller.  I assume the electronics were identical.

Just for reference steve and shorling are the same person.  Rudy (from Lionel) has confirmed that the FIRST Thomas & Friends Set run is not compatible with the Lionchief Universal Remote.  I would expect this fact will be added to the Universal Remote exception list.  After studying the Universal Remote programming instruction and studying the FIRST run controller electronic PCB, it seems obvious to me that the technologies employed in each are not compatible which gives me high confidence in Rudy's assessment.  My path forward is to install a Lionchief PCB in my Thomas Engine and operate it with the Universal Remote.  I have a Series 2 PCB on order from Lionel parts.  Based on Lionel's parts feedback I expect the PCB pinout and form factor will permit a direct replacement in my Thomas Engine.  It seems to me that the confusion results from the fact that Iionel did not roll the Thomas & Friends Set part number nor the Thomas Engine part number to differentiate several Thomas design configurations.
