Guys,
I have a Lionel Whistle tender, with metal wheels and axles, but the part of the trucks that house the axles are plastic. The wheels are really filthy with accumulated black gunk. The contact rollers are grungy too.
I understand that contact cleaner would clean these right up, but if I spray it on, will it melt or damage the plastic axle housings? Will it melt or damage the plastic (or maybe rubber) coatings on the wires underneath the frame?

Use Naphtha for all your cleaning and degreasing needs - wheels, pickup rollers, motors, track, loco and rolling stock bodies, metal, plastic, whatever.
Naphtha does not damage plastic and most importantly does not dissolve the insulation on motor windings like alcohol does.

I use electronic cleaner. They sell two types at Home Depot.
Make sure you get th one for circuit boards.
