Hey folks,

I have a Lionel AC6000 (6-28331) that is exhibiting some control issues. The engine runs okay in forward, but there is no change in the RPMs corresponding to changes in speed. More serious control issues become apparent when the unit is operating in reverse. The engine might start normally, then it might hesitate or lurch forward unexpectedly, then it might run normally for a few seconds, and then it is anyone’s guess on what it will do next. 

Again, these more significant issues only occur in reverse. Only the RPM issue occurs in both forward and reverse.

The first sign of trouble with this engine was some occasional flickering of the headlight on the trailing end while the unit was running forward. Then one day the engine developed a short. I traced the short to a connector on one of the trucks and made the repair. This latest behavioral problem surfaced following the short.

The wiring plugs and boards are seated properly and the wiring looks good. The engine has been reset. I am guessing it is a component issue. Any thoughts on which board or boards might hold the components that are the likely source of the odd behavior?

This is modular so you can start with the R4LC, after that the Motor Driver but you rapidly run out of way to swap parts if you do not have another specific Motor Drive part to swap in.  R4LC is a good start point along with ensuring a good ungrounded antenna connection to the board.  Also check for bad wires.  Hunting down these kind of Lionel problems is very time consuming and can be very frustrating if you lack wiring diagrams and the basic understanding of the modular system.  G

Thanks for the tips. Another reset brought back proper engine sound synchronization. I performed a second inspection of the wiring and this time I found a pinched wire going to the motor control board. I think I will replace it and then move on to the other items you mentioned.

I have another AC6000 from the same catalog that I can use to test the radio board and, if necessary, the MCB. This should make it easy to rule these in or out as suspects.

Thanks for the additional feedback. I replaced the pinched wire and checked the items mentioned in this thread and the problem is still present. A new fact emerged today. In addition to only happening in reverse, it also seems to only happen when the unit crosses over to another power district (I split the throttles across my layout 1-2-1-2... to keep the load manageable). Sure seems like a signal issue.

I went to swap radio boards with my other AC6000 and was surprised to find it uses the RCMC board system. Interesting, as both engines were first cataloged at the same time in 2009. I guess the CSX unit got built from the bottom of the parts bin. So, I am hoping for the best and ordering a new R4LC.
