Couplers open when used in a large # of cars train

Some couplers are just sensitive. 

I use black twist ties, cut them x to look like air hose.

OK, dumb question; just how many different size dental rubber bands are there? Why wouldn't any one of them work, since they are fairly small?

There are 5 different sizes !

Can't you tell by looking at them which would be best to fit around those big couplers?

If by Dental rubber bands you mean the rubber bands used with braces, these are also separated by strength.  The ones my daughter uses have the strength identified by animals, the larger the animal, the stronger the rubber band.  I'm not the expert on these but these bands are designed for single use, makes me wonder how long they would last in non mouth environments.  IMHO, the most challenging part of this idea would be putting the rubber bands on the couplers.  A couple of dental picks would come in handy.

Zip ties or black electrical tape also for a quick fix if you're not repairing the coupler 

I found some tiny little "rubber" bands at the local dollar store, meant for girls to tie their hair into pony tails.  They're not really rubber, but instead some sort of stretchy plastic or vinyl that can be stretched to incredible lengths before breaking.  They come in all kinds of different colors, and I bought a package of 500 black bands for (you guessed it!)............ a dollar.

Picture courtesy of Ebay in the UK.  The bands I have are only about one half inch in diameter.  Wrap 'em twice around the coupler, and you're good to go. 

And if the ties or bands don't hold or work that is why God made super glue and as they say a little dab will do.you !!
