I'd like to think that "railfan" was the explanation but I think it has a lot more to do with shaving costs - even though I cannot see that recording the announcements can be a large expense.

Railsounds crew and tower talk have gone through a few transformations; I think that RS5 from about 2005 was the best with engine-specific announcements and even some regional accents. Today under Legacy you only get something like that with Vision Line engines and a year or so ago there were several threads here about Lionel's decision to offer only "generic" crew and tower sounds on non-Vision engines.

And there are plenty of people here who I think would volunteer to do it for free! I think some people have already "donated" their tones to the cause but I don't know on what terms.

P.S. I vote for Eric S. to do the next VL diesel crew talk - he's a guy who knows how to string words together.

P.P.S. I heard the Vision Freightsounds on the PFE refers demonstrated at York and no one will be disappointed in them.

We both already have done scripted recordings.

I remember that but not which engines you guys did. I assume yours was an SP or UP steamer?
