Yes Mike, Dave is correct. I have the ability to run my layout on either DC or AC. The 3620 Rotating Searchlight Car does NOT rotate using DC current. It lights up but does not rotate. My 9307 MPC era chase gondola only marginally works with DC to the track: The power has to be down low, so the chase action is slow. If I turn up the power to the track, the chase movement halts.

My postwar era operating barrel cars, operating milks cars and merchandise cars all work fine on DC current.

Obviously Mike you already have a searchlight car you want to give to your grandson. You might want to consider a stationary non-revolving Lionel searchlight car, OR look for one of the K-Line ones. The K-Line ones rotate via a gear and movement of the train. They can be a little finicky, but with a little adjustment and lubrication, they have a very noticeable rotation even at slower running speeds.
