I'm trying to to update my DCS system and encountered this error :

I'm using a newer Windows 10 Toshiba laptop with a USB to serial adapter based on the Prolific chipset. Windows will not let me assign any other com port than COM3.  I know the TIU works because I can run my trains under DCS. Windows Device manager says the device is working properly with these settings: 9600, 8 bits, 1 stop bit no parity flow control none. I have tried power cycling the TIU with no luck.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Rick

Rick,

Red LED on in TIU. Stereo jumper cable inserted from proto dispatch to proto cast.

You must do the following in the following order:

  • Remove all power from the TIU - Aux. Power port, USB Pport and Fixed #1 Input
  • Connect the 1/8" stereo jumper cable between ProtoDispatch and ProtoCast
  • Power on the TIU from either Aux.Power port, USB port or Fixed Input #1
  • The TIU's red LED should come come on steady without any blinking. If it doesn't come on steady you didn't follow the above procedure and the TIU upgrade will fail.
  • Click on the TIU upgrade icon at the top of the Loader Program's window and then click OK.

When you do the remote upgrade:

  • Remove all power from the TIU - Aux. Power port, USB Pport and Fixed #1 Input
  • Remove the 1/8" stereo jumper cable between ProtoDispatch and ProtoCast
  • Power on the TIU from either Aux.Power port, USB port or Fixed Input #1
  • The TIU's red LED should blink the correct number of tiomnes before coming on steady. If it doesn't blink before coming on on steady the remote upgrade will fail.
  • Click on the remote upgrade icon at the top of the Loader Program's window and then click OK.

Success with one caveat. I had to upgrade because I bought my first Proto 3 locomotive. I went to the MTH site and downloaded the latest versions of the loader and updater. (tiu6p00.dcst and remote6p00.dcsr) No matter what  I did I got the COM3 error. On a whim I found  copies of  the previous versions (tiu5p0.DCst and remote5p0.DCsr) and they both installed without a hitch. Tested my trains and DCS5 show on the remote and so far so good.

So my question is my TIU to old to accept 6.0 or did I need to have 5.0 installed first?

Thanks,

Rick

OK, I was finally able to get the com to the TIU for the update of TIU itself.  That requires the stereo mini audio cable.  Looks like that is to be removed to update the remote.  all other connections remain.

I have not been able to get a serial COM connection to update the remote.  I have tried 2 different usb to serial adapters, ensured current drivers.  Recycled power on the TIU.

I have used these adapters for instrumentation work over the last 15 years.  I bought new ones also for this.  3 uSB to serial tried.  2 brands.
LED flashes about 9 times.  Not sure what is the right number, but comes on steady.  that seems to be the major difference between power up with out and with the audio cable.

have a windows 7 notebook and windows 10 notebook.  both behave the same, which is not much because the system can't find the com.

Connections Remote in from remote - a 4 wire straight through handset cord

USB to serial (RS232 null modem?) to computer

Aux power from a Z1000

No other connections
