USB port on the TIU or connecting with a USB to serial adapter?

I would have to first ask, what is he trying to do?

If it's load software into an engine, have him do a signal test with that engine.

Some people think that because they see the TIU light on, it is powered. It does not power the track though.

If it's trying to update the TIU, it's probably a computer port issue if the cables used are good and all is connected properly.

Ok. So still can be lots of reasons.

I would still recommend a signal test first. Is he doing this on a test track with the layout disconnected?

Could the laptop have some security issue with the ports? or the DCS program?

I'm just spitballing here.

I am going to guess here and assume you are having the same problem as I had after upgrading to Windows 11.  Problem was that Windows 11 would not work with the drivers for the serial to usb  adapter.  If you open the Device Manager and check the Serial port you will likely see a message that Windows 11 required compatible driver.  I was able to remove the drivers and after reloading I was once again able to connect to the TIU.

Both Windows 10 and 11 have issues with certain USB to serial adapters.  I just ordered a new adapter from StarTech that solved my issues.

I have a dedicated laptop for programming that runs XP….

I've been using Windows 10 with both a USB<->Serial and a real serial port for the TIU, both work just fine.  I'm not even considering Windows 11 for some time, let them work the bugs out for a year or two, then I'll take a look at it.

BTW, if this is a Rev. L TIU, you could have just used a USB A-to-B cable.

Same here. My bench TIU is a revision I3a (serial port) and my layout TIU is a revision L (USB). Neither TIU has any issues with the loader and my Windows 10 laptop, using either a serial to USB adapter (revision I3a) or USB A to B cable (revision L).
