My original post on this topic was incorrect, so I apologize to Gunnerjohn. This is my real dilemma. Some of my locomotives with PS2 have a 2.4V 700mah NiCD battery consisting of two AA size cells glued together with wire leads and a connector. I am replacing the NiCD batteries with two EBL 1.2 Nimh 2800mah rechargeable batteries. The problem is I am not certain which wire lead is (-) and which is (+). I am guessing that the black wire is (-), so the red wire is (+). Is this a correct guess? Is there a way I can test / check the original battery to make sure I get the replacement right?

Correct, it appears the first picture you posted maybe the the polarity of one of the batteries was reversed. Of course, since there was no actual polarity indicated it may just be a misleading picture and I assumed you were trying to indicate something different.
