Ha...this reminds me of the Lionel 1992 Christmas boxcar debacle. Lionel held a contest with their employees to design the 1992 Christmas boxcar. This was suppose to be the first in a series of employee designed Christmas cars.

A lady by the name of Bertha Collins, along with her granddaughter, won the contest. The car was cataloged in the 1992 Stocking Stuffer catalog.

People raised such a stink about not liking the graphics, that Lionel redesigned the graphics. There was an insert in the catalog showing the new design.

"Due to customer response, Lionel has redesigned the 1992 Christmas Boxcar to follow the themes traditionally used in the graphic design of our Holiday Commemorative series."

I sort of felt sorry for that poor women and her granddaughter. I'm sure they made a big deal of her winning at the plant, only later to can the design.

This is exactly what I thought of when I read about this new contest.

I seem to remember that the winning car was produced but just a limited number for employees only.  Probably wrong about this as I don't remember any coming up for sale.
