Did Lionel ever make the 6-16849 Rotary Coal Dumper? It does not show on their website search.

Yes they did as Laz has/had one as I remember him looking for coal for it. 

Gerry, Thank you for the link to Gryzbowski Trains. I see their statement that the 6-16849 was never manufactured.

The design would work if the Rotary Dumper was elevated two to three inches higher to create a bigger storage bin for the Coal. Then the belt loader could collect it and run up and into the waiting bathtub gondolas.  Added blocks under the trestles could elevate the track to the higher elevation.  It would take a longer foot-print (space) to get the cars higher up to the Rotary Dumper.

My 6-32910 Rotary Coal Tipple can only dump one car at a time before the tray under the Rotary Tipple is full.  I plan to build a hole with a drawer under my table to allow more cars to be unloaded. I will then pull he drawer forward and scoop out the coal from the drawer to reload the cars.

If anyone has other ideas, please share your suggestions. I have twelve CP Rail Bathtub Gondolas that my three CP Rail GP35s will pull through the Rotary Coal Tipple. I need to catch twelve bags of 6-24148 larger Coal.

Hobby Speed on Ebay has both types of Coal: 6-24148 and 6-16889.  If anyone has an actual picture of the 6-16849 Rotary Coal Dumper on a layout I would like to see it. 

From what I understand, the Rotary Dumper was cancelled almost last minute due to cost overruns.

The parts needed, different from the Rotary Tipple, came in at a cost much more than projected, regardless of supplier.

I have the Rotary Coal Tipple and love it.   I raised it a bit, and use my postwar coal loader (#397) with it.

Here's my Rotary Tipple (6-32910) that I bought in 2002, installed where the track is level with my platform. I built a little box under the unit with an opening in the bottom and attached a large funnel under the table with a flexible tube that empties into a gallon plastic jug. I can dump 4 or 5 loaded rotary cars before the jug is full. It is almost as much fun to watch the jug under the table fill as it is to watch the Tipple rotate and dump the cars. I haven't yet designed a way to hide the tubing or jug from view:

I looks like you could fit a post war coal elevator in there, or close too it.

The post war eleveated coal dump used one. A second raised catch bin under the dump feeding the standard coal conveyor, and that feeding a car on the next line. You might have to raise the tipple pretty high though (?)

There may be a newer conveyor version you could adapt? 

While I don’t know the model number, the Jersey High Raiders club uses a rotary dumper to great effect .  It’s a highlight when viewing their layout.  Here’s a long version and a short version video.

Funny that this should come up now.

Taken a couple of days ago. I have no visible pit around my new installation (real estate issues), but I am going to model the top of the stairs/an entry "house", indicating a space underneath. I am also going to paint mine in a more 1950's color palette - eliminating most of the "safety yellow" and such. Not sure what I'm going to do about the coal itself, either. I have a bizarre idea, but am a long way from trying it.

I have used this dump in another area of the layout some years ago; I then boxed it up again, to wait for a better place. It showed up unexpectedly.

The lift bridge to the coal mine (off-main-layout staging yard - see the 1X4 to the left); switch at "tunnel" from existing layout. This is one of 2 4X4 areas that I stole from my new work area addition. Lift-up section to come at right (to the rotary area above). I had to carefully explain these 2 "tunnels" to my contractor; the size will eventually be reduced by the backdrop.

There will be ground cover, a realistically-repainted #840 Power Station and a basic backdrop. And a bayou under the lift bridge. I need to locate my 1:48 alligator. I find the 1" foam from H-D to be thick enough without stacking; thicker is hard to find in this climate, anyway.

Fyi...the coal tipple at the club is a custom build.  The barge has two holes in the bottom where pvc pipes join together in a "Y" and dump into a 5 gallon bucket.   We appreciate the kind words.
