Was wondering if anyone could tell me the differences between these two Lionel Cab Forward Models.

LIONEL 6-11462 Southern Pacific LEGACY Scale AC-12 Cab Forward

LIONEL SP Scale 4-8-8-2 AC-12 Cab Forward TMCC o gauge 6-38071

Was looking for a way to search this topic but cannot find a "search" box.

Thanks.

The "first run" of the SP cab forwards, was, as best as I can remember, a JLC version with only 2-chufs per revolution and an incorrect whistle. I purchased one, that was discounted, in an un-opened box, then sent it Train America Studios for up-grade to 4-chuffs per revolution and a more appropriate SP style whistle. It still runs great!

The newer/latest Vision Line cab forward, has Legacy sound and special features, plus was available in different road numbers, as well as a "Daylight painted" version (obviously fantasy). Cost a LOT more money too!

Hot Water, can the whistle still be upgraded? On older model TMCC models it could be done by changing out an IC.

If you can find the correct Lionel part number for the specific "sound chip" you desire, I believe Lionel is still selling such "sound chips" for the older TMCC units, i.e. Rail Sounds 4 and/or 5".

What would be a fair price to pay for this engine new in the box?

This thread is slightly old and info on pricing is less easy to come by than it was a few years back. Both the TMCC and Legacy AC-12s had a street price north of $1K although if you can find one now NIB it will probably go for less than that. Personally I think they are worth it; both versions used the same tooling, which IMHO is some of the best Lionel ever produced.

Sounds on the TMCC version were definitely not perfect in terms of chuff rate although the whistle and air horn were reasonably close to prototype. If you like this sort of thing it actually has better crew talk than the Legacy version. Mine needed work on maintenance of the smoke unit but otherwise runs fine. Legacy version has whistle smoke, which when it is tuned properly is a nice extra feature.
