I am attempting to take apart this pictured gearbox to expose the worm gear from a US hobbies U.P. 2-10-2.
It is obvious that the two most lateral screws hold the gear case together. The screws in the central part of the gearbox retain the idler gears in position. Despite removing the gear case screws I cannot separate the two halves of the gear case, at least not with light finger pressure. Advice and opinions would be welcome from someone who has done this before.

Loosen the two screws that hold the case together,…..back them out far enough so their heads are out of the countersink, but not completely unthreaded,……use the but end of a plastic handled screwdriver and tap on the exposed screw heads LIGHTLY. ……ThIs will start to separate the halves, ….easy peasy from there ….

Your advice helped. It turns out the idler screw and screw/nut also hold it together. I was a little afraid to remove these at first out of concern of damaging the idler gear. Here are the pics after cleaning. The machining is spectacular. This locomotive sat for about 50 years but the gears look new.

That’s good news, ….now lube it up with Labelle, …no, wait,…lubriplate,..oops no,..uhm,..uh,…maybe lubrabelle,….or is it laplate?…..🤣🤣🤣🤣

Maybe a U-100? Idler gear may be brass or bronze.
