Good news ! - the DP Alco RS-3 project is moving forward . Some people who know me know I've almost made this a personal mission in life to see Jack do these . I've got a bunch of them In HO and I know Erik posted great photos he took of them when the last run arrived . You will find all the specs , roads - and yes price info on the DP web-site now .

As long as the project get subscribed enough to be viable I've guaranteed the New Haven ones to be done . Will do D+RGW and Pennsy as well . I think there are good geographic choices to cover different regions of the country too . Keep in mind that if we can make a go of it here with these Jack is serious about doing more O projects . Really looking forward to these .

I did not think it possible too appreciate Scott Mann and 3rd Rail any more until I saw these RS-3 prices. Thanks Scott. I hope DP does well with this project.

Sunset makes great stuff, no doubt about it.  For the price they cannot be beat.

Things like Division Point, Key, Glacier Park Models and Kohs are a completely different animal.  They are for the things you have always wanted one of and are willing to pay for the best.

Did you use the link provided in the original posters announcement? There is a "preliminary list" of road names with descriptions.

If this is the list, something is not right!?

Reading in Green/Gold Stripes or Yellow Green (same engine)
D&RGW in Black and Cream Corn Yellow, Body mounted filters, number on cab, or later Black/Orange Flying Grande (same engine)
New Haven McGinnis Black/Orange, or Orange/Black (same engine)
Great Northern or SP&S Empire scheme/Broad stripe (same engine)
Boston & Maine MM scheme with Black hood roof
NYC Lightning Stripe Duel service or PL&E Green/Black
Pennsy Duel service with antenna ($50 additional for antennas)

Then you had better contact Division Point immediately. Publicly deriding them here is not appropriate.

Stephen,

Here is an exact quote from the DP website:

"I need 6-10 models for each railroad to proceed, total of 5 roads first run. Plans are done, waiting on go ahead."

He's clearly specified the parameters.  Pony up the cash/reservations or hold your complaints/criticisms/gripes.

I've had a lot of back and forth with Jack over the last 2 years , and my first priority was seeing that New Haven got done and I made it clear I would cover the run of them if necessary . I suggested doing O versions of the RS-2's that were done in HO to save on research / time etc for a run of models ( likely around 35 models or so ) that I wanted to see done . The RS-3 made more sense from a standpoint of what is being done now on the 3rd run of HO models . I had some input , but Jack made the decision on what to offer - there were changes before it was made public and this list reflects what would likely sell . Part of the case I made to Jack initially was to view this as a project that could have other runs in the future - like he does with the HO models . I hope another run offers both N+W ( Stephen ? ) and the CN family ( Mark ) and maybe RS-2's and RSD's as well . Sure hope you Pennsy guys get to see a Hammerhead down the road as well . I hope there other New Haven guys out there so I can spread my spending over some other roads as well . We've got a month to see if the O community thinks this is worth doing .

I will pony up when he offers the road names that I want. Who picked these road choices?   It could be YEARS before he gets NKP or N&W like he has for HO scale. I won't hold my breath. Erik  of MMW will most like get them done. They are on his list. I won't hold my breath for DP.

Stephen

He's got PRR, so nothing else matters.    DP, like Sunset and most established importers, has been producing projects and delivering them on time.

In the meantime I haven't seen anyone else announce any ALCo RS series, so this seems like the horse to hitch the wagon to.   That is if you like what he is offering.

The problem I see is a marketing one. There are a lot more O scalers that are not on a forum. If an O scaler that is not aware of this project and were to check the DP site right now or in the future, one would go to the current or future projects sites on the DP site, there is nothing there, nada!. Even in HO there is no post/reference to what is being produced. The HO RS projects project states May 8, 2013. That 3 years ago! People are not going to go thru all the old post, they will go to current or future projects. How's Jack to get orders if there is no post under current or future projects.  It is a good way to doom a project from the start. I have brought this to Erik's and Jacks attention, but if falls on deaf ears. VERY POOR MARKETING!  The O scale RS 3 project is very important to me also. I want to see it to fruition. I also have highly considered doing the N&W RS 3 project in O as an exclusive and had mentioned this to Jack. The DP site continues to be very poor in keeping the model railroading community and potential buyers at bay. I am a dealer and I don't have any clue as to what HO RS projects is being produced or cancelled so that I can adjust my order.

This is a highly specialized and not wildly profitable end of our hobby.  I submit that if "Jack" were to receive ten firm commitments for N&W, right now, that railroad would be on his list.  He has to have 6-10 of each of seven, or somewhere between 42 and 70 firm commitments total before he can even start.

He already has a giant investment - "plans" are not cheap.  I doubt he cares to add to the expense by hiring a competent marketing department.

Anything can happen with enough motivated customers.  Are there really fifty folks out there who want a $3000 Alco?

Opinion?

Bob: Jack would not do the N&W is the first run as the plans I do believe are not a go yet. I hope I am mistaken . Plans are already paid for from the HO RS projects, and it is our money paying for the project up front.

Second,  Jack does not need a marketing dept. Just a good website with current update information.

I am hope that there are enough orders for the road names for the RS3s to be done. I will patiently wait for the N&W and NKPs. Right now I have 12 MMW locos on my list coming.

I will wait to see.

I guess I'm in the same boat as you.   I really want an Erik to do an SD45 demo unit but so far I've been unsuccessful at getting it considered.  I'd also be interested in a Reading SD45 also,  but it's not being offered for likely the same reason.

Do you have any suggestions?

The way to be successful is to meet whatever his minimum order is.  There simply is no way these guys can make one model for one customer and still not go broke.

I disagree with Stephen.  I am positive that if Jack got ten firm orders for a Norfolk and Western RS, he would produce it in the first run, if there is a first run.  He sounds like he has experience with high end models - somebody find those ten guys, and ask Jack?

I think the problem is more than just getting sufficient reservations.  It seems that detailed plans are needed for each road name so that the road specific details can be accurately represented.  so, without both the plans and guaranteed reservations, a particular road name probably doesn't have a chance.

What or who is MMW? Thanks, Scott.

Stephen, what is the name of your dealership and can you post a link to your web site?

Rob:  Thanks you for asking, but the O the RS3's are sold direct, just as with Kohs, Midwestern Model Works, and Division Point. As far as I know Key is at a stand still as according to the web site nothing is due in till 20125. I don't think any us will be around then. You and I are paying the same price as is everyone else.

You must be a professional politician, as you NEVER answered Rule292's question.

nw2124 posted:

Actually you are the politician as you don't have guts to sign your name. I would not expect less from one who does 3-rail downing a 2-rail modeler.

You don't know my name because you have not been paying attention.

All my info has been posted before. FYI

Then why didn't you answer Rule292's question?

Best regards and stop dogging me and others with your demeaning comments.

Boy, talk about the pot calling the kettle black!

I would think you would be a better man that.

Actually I am, but it is YOU who have continually bashed the likes of Sunset/3rd Rail, Key, and now Division Point.

Stephen

By the way, you STILL didn't answer his question!

Hi Stephen ,

On the first run I'm not sure . The builder was fairly adamant about a max of 5-6 roads and there were 3 roads as of last night that had good orders on them . A 4th road (Pennsy ) I'm fairly confident will make the cut too . I actually suggested N+W a while back , but maybe Jack keyed off what sold in HO to make the decisions on which to offer . I do know that the CV versions were offered in both runs for HO and that has to count for something . I'll try to get some info and relay what you said . I'll try to get something back on here tomorrow .

          Regards,

          Bryan

I just sent Jack an order for 3 N&W RS3s. Any one else contact Jack at DP. The N&W had an extra long cab, so no N&W will ever be done in plastic. Last and only chance. How about you Christopher?

Thanks Stephen - I got another guy for one so I think you'll get your models
